An Octoneedle (Japanese: オクトニードル) was a hovering droid used by the Galactic Empire to protect the corridors and walkways in their first Death Star.[2] They appeared as spheres with eight needle-like protrusions which were at least partially retractable.[1]

Luke Skywalker, just prior to rescuing Princess Leia Organa in 0 BBY, encountered these droids while exploring the Death Star.[1]

Behind the scenes

Octoneedles appeared in the 1987 Japanese Star Wars game.[1] Their name was revealed in the Japanese language guide of the game serialized in Family Computer Magazine, in which it was rendered as オクトニードル (Okutoniidoru) in katakana syllabary.[2]
