- "What's the status of the Imperial occupation?"
"Mandalore's under complete lockdown." - ―Hera Syndulla and Kanan Jarrus
The occupation of Mandalore[7] was the Galactic Empire's occupation of the planet Mandalore.[2] Though the Empire's predecessor, the Galactic Republic, had helped the Mandalore resistance take back the world, the Republic forces still stationed on Mandalore allowed for the Empire to take control.[6]
During the occupation, the Empire had established the an Imperial Academy from the former Royal Academy of Government in the capital city of Sundari[8] and many Mandalorians would serve in the Empire with Clan Saxon pledging their services to the Imperial regime[5] and many would enlist in the Imperial Military as Imperial Super Commandos.[9]
Bo-Katan Kryze, who was installed as regent of Mandalore following the capture of Maul, refused to obey the Empire would be forced out of power by Clan Saxon and replaced by Gar Saxon who would rule Mandalore as its Imperial-installed governor. After being ousted, Bo-Katan would lead a resistance movement in order to liberate Mandalore from Imperial occupation and would be supported by the rest of Clan Kryze.[5]
By 2 BBY[3], Mandalore had fallen into civil war between the Mandalorian resistance and the Empire with Clan Wren having joined the resistance and Tiber Saxon having succeeded Gar as governor following the latter's death on Krownest following a skirmish on the planet.[10] A year later, Tiber had successfully recreated the Arc Pulse Generator, a superweapon built by Sabine Wren before she joined the Spectres and sought to use it to finally suppress the uprising and ensure Imperial rule, however this was thwarted by the Mandalorian rebels with the backing of the newly formed Alliance to Restore the Republic, that saw the weapon destroyed and Tiber Saxon killed.[5]
Toward the end of the Galactic Civil War[11], the Empire, seeking to punish Mandalore for its rebellion and to prevent any faction from gaining the support of the planet, launched the Great Purge of Mandalore that saw the genocide of the Mandalorian population.[4] Lead by Moff Gideon, Imperial forces laid waste to Mandalore in what would be known as the Night of a Thousand Tears that saw the decimation of Mandalorian recruits and the destruction of their forces.[12] Bo-Katan, in an effort to prevent further loss of life, would surrender to Moff Gideon and handed over the Darksaber on the condition that all hostilities would cease, but this was a ploy and Bo-Katan was betrayed and the purge continued, turning Mandalore into a wasteland.[13]
Prelude
During the Clone Wars, the Mandalorian terrorist organization the Death Watch, lead by Pre Vizsla, had made attempts to overthrow the pacifist New Mandalorian government lead by Duchess Satine Kryze in order to restore Mandalore's warrior past. Lead by Pre Vizsla, the Death Watch aligned itself with the Confederacy of Independent Systems in order to help overthrow the New Mandalorians who had declared Mandalore neutral in the Clone Wars. By 21 BBY[14], the Death Watch gained the attention of the Galactic Republic following an attack on a Republic cruiser by a saboteur which, along with rumors that Mandalore was going to side with the Confederacy, Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi to Mandalore to investigate the Death Watch. During his investigation, both Obi-Wan and Satine had come across the Death Watch camp with Vizla revealing himself following an investigation to the moon of Concordia.[15] As part of their plans, the Death Watch made two attempts on Satine's life with an attack on the Coronet with the support of super battle droids[16] and then on Coruscant where a Death Watch assassin was sent to kill her in order to ensure that the Republic would occupy Mandalore and give the needed public support to ensure the Death Watch can take over, but this would also fail.[17]
By 19 BBY[14] the Death Watch remained committed to overthrowing Duchess Satine even as they sit in exile on the moon of Carlac when they came across an escape pod containing the Sith Lords Maul and his brother Savage Opress. They would be brought back to the Death Watch camp on Zanbar where, after recovering, Maul managed to convince the Death Watch to join forces to eliminate their mutual enemies, forming an alliance that would become the Shadow Collective that would go on to include several crime syndicates; the Black Sun, the Pyke Syndicate, and later the Hutt Clan.[18] Together, the Shadow Collective staged a successful takeover of the planet with Satine being imprisoned and Pre Vizsla becoming Mandalore's new leader, though he would be killed by Maul during a duel for the position. With Vizsla dead, the Death Watch broke into those who remained loyal to Maul and those who opposed his reign, the latter rallying around Bo-Katan Kryze who formed a resistance movement to depose Maul.[19]
The Siege of Mandalore would lead to the immediate occupation of Mandalore by the Empire.
Mandalore soon fell into a state of civil war with the Mandalore resistance fighting against the Mandalorian Supercommandos loyal to Maul. Fighting would break out in the capital Sundari, initially during a failed attempt to rescue Satine, but devolved into full-scale warfare by nightfall. During the battle, Obi-Wan, who had been captured as part of his attempt to rescue Satine, was freed and was told by Bo-Katan to alert the Republic of Maul's takeover knowing they would likely invade the planet, which she desired knowing it would likely lead to Maul's death.[20] Maul would remain in control of Mandalore and the Republic would eventually invade Mandalore during the last days of the Clone Wars with the Mandalorian rebels, assisted by the newly formed 332nd Division of the 501st Legion lead by Clone Commander Rex and former Padawan/Advisor Ahsoka Tano, invaded and besieged the planet.[21] After a lengthy battle, Maul's forces would be defeated and was successfully captured on the eve of the execution of Order 66.[22]
