- "True to a longstanding tradition, Nugtosh has taken his position atop the starting spire!"
- ―Fodesinbeed Annodue
Nugtosh was a male alien individual who was known to preside over podraces on Malastare, including the Vinta Harvest Classic in 32 BBY.
Biography
Nugtosh, a mysterious skeletal alien, lived on the planet Malastare as a vagrant.[2] His origin and age were unknown to the Malistarians. Sometime prior to the Battle of Naboo, Nugtosh made a promise to not sabotage the podrace track during the annual Vinta Harvest Classic, in exchange for the opportunity to make an appearance at the beginning of each race. Nugtosh's appearance during each race became a respected permanent fixture of podraces on Malastare.[3] Nugtosh was considered good luck by the podracers and fans.[2]
Behind the scenes
Nugtosh made his first appearance in the 1999 video game Star Wars Episode I: Racer.[4] His name was identified in Star Wars: Episode I Racer: Prima's Official Strategy Guide, which also offered a backstory to the character, which among other things stated that Nugtosh's gender was unknown.[3] However, Nugtosh's entry in The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, released in 2008, explicitly states Nugtosh is a male.[2]
Nugtosh appears to be an anagram of the word gunshot, probably a reference to the parallel of Nugtosh's climbing of the spire to the real-world use of a gunshot to usher in a race.
