- "Nothing must interfere with my shipment to the Nodgra system."
- ―Abdi-Badawzi
The Nodgra system was a part of the Outer Rim Territories' Airam sector. In 3 BBY, the crime lord Abdi-Badawzi of the planet Socorro forced the young smuggler Drake Paulsen to work as a co-pilot aboard the light freighter Seldom Different that would serve as a decoy on a smuggling run to the Nodgra system. In another instance, Badawzi was offering a substantial payment for a pair of chemical tanks containing two volatile, explosive liquids to be transported to the system.
Description
The Nodgra system was located in the Airam sector of the Outer Rim Territories.[1] It was situated at least three days of hyperspace travel away from the planet Socorro[3] of the Socorro system[4] in the Outer Rim's Kibilini sector.[1]
History
- "Just say what you want, Abdi."
"Safe delivery of a small cargo."
"Where?"
"The location isn't important to you."
"And the cargo?"
"You needn't concern yourself."
"Then what am I doing here?"
"You will be the decoy." - ―Drake Paulsen and Abdi-Badawzi
Abdi-Badawzi wished on two occasions for a cargo to be transported to the Nodgra system.
In 3 BBY,[5] the Socorro-based crime lord Abdi-Badawzi wished to have an illegal cargo delivered to the Nodgra system. To that end, he had the smuggler Kaine Paulsen and his son, Drake, captured and, threatening to kill Kaine, forced Drake to agree to take part in the smuggling run as a co-pilot of a decoy starship. Badawzi did not disclose what the cargo was and at first also did not reveal what the location of the delivery was. The crime lord then ordered his Coynite personal guard Tra'Parr'Sratt to ensure that the Seldom Different, the light freighter used as the decoy under the captaincy of Elias Halbert, returned to Socorro intact. At that point, Badawzi also stated out loud that nothing could be allowed to interfere with the shipment to the Nodgra system, to which Parr'Sratt responded with the Coynite language acknowledgement "Al'ha'gra."[3]
When Drake subsequently looked at his bound and gagged father, the latter discreetly gave him several hand signals, letting him know of the minimum travel time to the system as well as telling the young smuggler that he would be safe during the trip. Afterward, the Seldom Different departed Socorro, and two days later, the freighter was intercepted by the Imperial-class Star Destroyer Inquisitor, whose boarding party did not find anything illegal aboard the smaller craft. Later, Parr'Sratt transported Drake to Kaine's light freighter Miss Chance in[3] the Outer Rim's[6] Elrood sector before returning to Socorro alongside Halbert.[3]
In another instance, Abdi-Badawzi was also offering a substantial payment for a smuggling run to the Nodgra system to transport two old chemical tanks containing volatile liquids that reacted explosively to each other. The nature of the cargo was not being revealed until someone agreed to make the run, and the job offer was not taken up by anyone for some amount of time despite rumors spreading about it. Eventually, a group of individuals sought out further information about the potential deal.[3]
Behind the scenes
The Nodgra system was introduced in Star Wars Adventure Journal 2.
The Nodgra system was first mentioned in the short story "Out of the Cradle," which was written by Patricia A. Jackson and published in the May 1994 second issue of West End Games' Star Wars Adventure Journal magazine.[3] The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas placed the Nodgra system in grid square L-20.[2]
The printing of "Out of the Cradle" in Star Wars Adventure Journal 2 also included a roleplaying adventure seed for use with Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game in which Abdi-Badawzi is offering the job offer of a smuggling run to the system. The adventure seed suggests that Badawzi can either load the cargo aboard the player characters' starship or trick them into unwittingly playing the part of a decoy, which would lead to them running into trouble with Galactic Empire authorities. This article assumes the scenario plays out as described.[3]
