- "Do you not know who I am? Let me show you. Do you know what I have done? I have destroyed legends. My own blood. And you… all of you think this is your time? Your moment… to destroy me? No. No. I am Kylo Ren. This is my reign. My ascent has just begun."
- ―Kylo Ren, to the Alazmec of Winsit
A mission was undertaken in 34 ABY by Supreme Leader Kylo Ren to the planet Mustafar shortly after the Battle of Crait, where the knight hoped to keep his promise to let the past die by destroying every vestige he could find of his grandfather's history.
Once he arrived on Mustafar, Ren fought and killed a group of Alazmec of Winsit warriors while making his way into Darth Vader's castle, where he met his grandfather's former assistant, Vaneé, who promised to show the young tyrant how Vader turned his painful past into power.
Prelude
- "There's still more to do. More has to die. I'll start with you."
- ―Kylo Ren, to the helmet of Darth Vader
Following Snoke's death, Kylo Ren began his reign as the new Supreme Leader of the First Order.
Following the murder of his former dark side master, Kylo Ren had taken over the position of Supreme Leader of the First Order, but he was immediately met with a long awaited duel against his uncle and former Jedi Master, Luke Skywalker, where his anger made the new Supreme Leader get distracted by Skywalker, letting the Resistance escape.
Shortly after the Battle of Crait, Ren met with General Hux and the rest of the First Order to announce himself officially as their new Supreme Leader, revealing Snoke's bisected corpse by lifting it with the Force, telling his subordinates that he was killed by the Resistance. During a conversation with his grandfather's mask, Ren realized that his attempt of killing the past was not complete, and that he had to destroy Vader's legacy so he could sever all ties with his past permanently.[3]
The mission
Arrival on Mustafar
- "Fascinating. Plunderer, pretender… or prince?"
- ―Vaneé, on Kylo Ren
Making his way up to his grandfather's castle, the Supreme Leader slaughtered a group of Alazmec of Winsit.
Traveling with his TIE silencer to the planet Mustafar, Ren quickly made his way into Darth Vader's castle, but as he went up the long set of stairs to the entrace, the Supreme Leader caught the attention of Vaneé, Darth Vader's former assistant, who quickly told three warriors of the Alazmec of Winsit, a group of Sith cultists that colonized Mustafar's Corvax Fen[4] region near the castle grounds of Fortress Vader,[5] to make their new visitor feel welcome.[3]
The cultist followed the assistant's command by firing arrows at Kylo Ren while welcoming him to their territory. Stopping an arrow with the force, as more of the warriors approached their mysterious visitor, the master of the Knights of Ren proceeded to ignite his lightsaber and call the cultists cowards, yelling them to come forward and attack him. Furiously striking down at the cultists, the Knight of Ren proclaimed that his reign had just begun and that he had destroyed legends, including his own father, believing that this was his time. After killing the group of Alazmec of Winsit and receiving a wound in his midsection, Ren finally made his way into the door of Vader's Castle, with a drop of his blood from the battle triggering it to open.[3]
Darth Vader's servant
- "You are the past. Darth Vader is the past. This entire place is the past. The past strangles me. Its expectations and legacies and vendettas. I will destroy every last vestige of it. I will free myself."
"You foolish, ignorant child. Vader's power was his past." - ―Kylo Ren and Vaneé
Meeting his grandfather's former servant, Vaneé, Ren demanded to know how Vader turned his past into his power.
Once inside the fortress, Ren was cordially greeted by Vaneé, Vader's assistant during the Imperial Era who by this point had been reduced to a head inside a giant droid body. Learning that he was Vader's grandson, Vaneé immediately offered to serve him in the way he served Vader years ago. The Supreme Leader showed no interest at first, saying that he will serve him with his death, explaining to the assistant that the past was strangling him and he needed to destroy it if he ever wanted to be free.[3]
Vaneé countered rebutted by saying that Vader's past was what gave him power, believing Ren's perception to be an ignorant one. The attendant offered to tell him how Vader turned his past into his power, to which Ren agreed, demanding his new servant to show him more of Vader's past.[3]
Aftermath
- "Why are we here, Vaneé? This is a nowhere planet."
"Not to Lord Vader, my prince. And therefore… not to you." - ―Kylo Ren and Vaneé
Determined to learn more about Vader's past, Kylo Ren traveled to Anakin and Luke's homeworld of Tatooine.
Being promised a way forward by Vaneé, the Supreme Leader and the assistant traveled to the desert planet of Tatooine, where Ren learned about Anakin Skywalker's history as a young slave and the winner of the Boonta Eve Classic while visiting Mos Espa.[2]
Wanting to erase this part of his grandfather's history, Kylo Ren went after Gardulla Besadii the Elder, Anakin's original owner, fighting the Hutt's rancors and guards on his way to kill her, but the knight was soon defeated by a mysterious individual that worked as Gardulla's bodyguard and wielded the Force, leading the young tyrant to become the Hutt's new prisoner.[2]
