A mining rig was a type of mining technology deployable both on planet surfaces and in space to mine minerals.[2][1]
During the High Republic Era, at least one such platform was located in the Hetzal system, when it was destroyed by the Great Hyperspace Disaster.[2]
During the Imperial Era[1] in 2 BBY,[3] the Galactic Empire deployed multiple mining rigs to the surface of the planet Ghorman, including at Jel-Novi and Leequa, to gouge-mine the planet for its kalkite,[1] a mineral needed for Emperor Palpatine's "energy project."[4]
