Saun Dann sets up Attichitcuk's mind evaporator.

"I don't need to ask how you find me. You see, I am your fantasy. I am your experience. So experience me. I am your pleasure. So enjoy me. This is our moment together in time. And we might turn this moment into an eternity."
―Mermeia, to Attichitcuk — 20?cb=20250116042720 ▶️ (file info)[1]

A mind evaporator, also known as a proton chair, was a device used to stimulate the mind. It could be used for either serious or entertainment purposes.

Characteristics

"Mind evaporator" was a Galactic Basic translation of a Wookiee term for any addictive video game that lacked any form of educational purpose.[2]

History

"I know you're searching for me. Searching, searching. I am here. My voice is for you alone. I am found in your eyes only. I exist for you. I am in your mind as you create me. Oh, yes… I can feel my creation." [giggles] "I'm getting your message. Are you getting mine?"
―Mermeia — 20?cb=20250116042720 ▶️ (file info)[1]

Attichitcuk also used the device as entertainment.[1] In 1 ABY,[3] he viewed holograms of Human females singing and dancing on the machine. One such individual in this virtual reality he viewed was Mermeia.[1] Around the same time, a spacer bought a proton chair during the Wookiee Life Day and brought it home, after which they used it to listen to a sensual female voice speak to them.[4]

Behind the scenes

Joe Johnston made a conceptual sketch of the mind evaporator, then named the "environmental transporter"—a virtual reality device that George Lucas wanted to illustrate Wookiees' positive outlook on life.[5]

According to some of Brian Bartholomew's blueprints for various props in The Star Wars Holiday Special released on its 30th anniversary, the mind evaporator was made up of a purchased chair, with the "proton helmet" being made of a hairdryer connected to a plastic accordion hose (such as one belonging to a vacuum cleaner), as well as a heavy cable with sockets. The earpieces were made of clear plastic glasses or another unknown component, the latter having wheat-lamps or pilot lamps twinkling randomly (though the rest of the earpiece is opaque), three extra control knobs below the earpieces, and a socket plate on the back hood; as well as having planted-on rivets as well as enameled clear visors. The evaporator controls on the arm portions of the chair were made of a Pearlcorder that would be used to play the cassette tapes. In addition, on the back of the chair were various plastic model kits and dummy doors, as well as a vent and planted-on clear plastic multimeter measurements by Olson Electronics.[6]

Proton chairs appeared as decorations for player's house in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts,[4] prior to its closure on December 15, 2011.[7] Proton chairs were added to the game with the release of the revamped Life Day event in December 2008. The chairs were typical Life Day rewards, available during all Life Day events from 2008 to the closure of the game.[8][9][10] When a player sat on a proton chair in their house, they could hear a female voice speaking calm and reassuring sentences.[4]
