«How blessed I am by the Creator in being able to join you on an occasion of such spectacle and bravery.»
―Poggle the Lesser speaks to his people the day before Meckgin[1]

Meckgin was a day on which the Geonosians celebrated the virtues of industry. Occurring during the rainy season on the planet Geonosis, the holiday was preceded by three days of gladitorial events in the Petranaki Arena leading up to the Eve of Meckgin Festival, followed by several more days of sport after it.[1] Lightly grilled arch grub was a popular meal during Meckgin.[2] Between 21 BBY and 19 BBY,[3] during the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, the homecoming of Archduke Poggle the Lesser—a former prisoner of war who was released following a deal with the Republic—occurred in time for the Geonosian leader to be present during Meckgin.[1]

At some point, the holiday was mentioned by an artist in an entry on Geonosians in their journal. The journal was eventually restored, expanded, and displayed at the Graf Archive[4] at some point no earlier than 34 ABY.[5]

Behind the scenes

Meckgin was first mentioned in the current Star Wars canon in Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel, a 2016 novel written by James Luceno.[1] Meckgin originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it was first mentioned in the Eve of Meckgin's name in "A Cast of Thousands: The Making of The New Essential Guide to Star Wars Characters," an article written by Daniel Wallace and published in the fifty-ninth issue of the Star Wars Insider magazine,[6] which released on April 2, 2002.[7] It was later described as a distinct holiday in "War Factories: Inside Kamino and Geonosis," an article also written by Wallace that was published in the sixty-sixth issue of Insider[8] on March 4, 2003.[9]
