- "Nobody will pay you if you're dead."
- ―Mashra, as quoted by Rey
Mashra was an Aqualish who worked as a scavenger on the desert planet Jakku. After the human Rey was abandoned on Jakku[1] in 21 ABY, she[4] initially helped[3] and cooperated with Mashra and the scavenger Ivano Troade, who were kind and sympathetic to her. However, Rey eventually realized that she did not need aid from anyone, despite some needing help from her, and began working independently.[1]
By 34 ABY,[5] Rey mentioned Mashra in a survival guide she compiled, quoting the Aqualish as having said that nobody would pay a scavenger who was dead[3] and noting that she missed her.[2] Rey also included an uncolored sketch of Mashra that showed her with black eyes, dark hair, and a set of robes.[3]
Behind the scenes
Mashra was first mentioned in Rey's Survival Guide, a 2015 replica journal written by Jason Fry and illustrated by Andrew Barthelmes. The book included a sketch of an Aqualish on the spread mentioning Mashra and Trode, but did not make clear which character it represented.[3] The Aqualish was then confirmed to be Mashra when a modified version of Rey's Survival Guide was released as part of the Star Wars 3-Book Gift Set in 2016.[2]
