During the Republic Era, an ecological calamity occurred on the planet Kwenn. In the time before the High Republic Era, mining firms were heavily drawn to Kwenn due to the presence of precious gemstones. The miners caused extensive damage to the environment, leveling mountains and relocating oceans, subsequently leaving the remains of their mining as colossal piles of slag. As a result, the climate worsened, flooding low areas with toxicity. During the High Republic, the Jedi Order and Galactic Republic saw many missions to Kwenn, led by Jedi Master Oppo Rancisis, to seek a solution to the disaster. As relocating Kwenn's millions of inhabitants was not viable, the Jedi and Republic instead sought to restore Kwenn's environment in the Grand Renewal, one of the Great Works of the High Republic, resulting in the creation of the Gem Cities of Kwenn.[1]
