- "We're not getting anywhere with a busted data spike. C'mon Nix, lets see Preeban."
- ―Kay Vess to Nix about going to Preebans
Kay's data spike was a data spike owned by the thief Kay Vess who also used it as a hairpin.
Description
Kay's data spike[3] was a stick–like device that could be used to slice into a dataport by inserting the scomp link which extended from one of its ends and controlled from a rotation section on the other end. The middle section of the spike was constructed in part from from a gold–color stick dice found on the casino planet Cantonica. The spike was small enough to be used as a hairpin.[2]
History
- "Ah, my data spike."
"Yeah, and it's broken. Some scarp-rat was selling it in the square. Says he found it in Sixth Kin turf." - ―Kay Vess learning about the scrap-rat from Bram Shano
The data spike had come into the possession of the thief Kay Vess[2] by 3 ABY[4] while she was living in the attic of The Broken Hoof bar in South Stretch Worker's District of the city Canto Bight on Cantonica.[2] That year,[4] the data spike was left in an area of the city controlled by the local Sixth Kin criminal organization and was later found by an individual who tried to sell it elsewhere in the Worker's District. Zabrak owner of The Broken Hoof, Bram Shano, later noticed the individual selling the then broken spike and recovered it for Vess as well as learning where it had been found. Around the same time, Vess was inspecting her gear in her room when she noticed that her data spike was missing. When the two next meet at The Broken Hoof's bar, Shano gave Vess back the spike and warned her that going against Sixth Kin would get her killed. After a brief argument, Shano tried to offer her some credits to fix the data spike, but Vess declined.[2]
Hoping to have the data spike repaired, Vess visited the Weequay mechanic Preeban in the Worker's District and gave him 150 credits to repair the data spike. Later that day, Vess used the data spike to access the back entrance of the Sixth Kin's Club Tarsus where she proceeded to a locked room in the office of the gang's leader Wen Delphis. After locking the door, she stole a forged identicard from the room.[2]
