The Longbeam[1] cruiser[2] Karvoss Dawn was in the service of the Galactic Republic's Republic Defense Coalition during the High Republic Era.[1] In 231 BBY,[3] the Karvoss Dawn participated in[1] the Battle of Galov,[5] responding to an attack on Relay Post Epsilon One in the Galov system by Tempest Runner Lourna Dee of the Nihil marauders, who was attempting to capture the space station. The Karvoss Dawn was dispatched to the system alongside the Longbeam Aurora IX and the Jedi Order cruiser Ataraxia, arriving to find the station under attack from Dee's starship, the Lourna Dee, and being boarded by Nihil. The Republic deployed Z-29 Skyhawks as the Nihil's own starfighters launched to engage them.[1]
The Karvoss Dawn was destroyed during the Battle of Galov against the forces of Lourna Dee (pictured).
When Dee, aboard her vessel, learned there would be no reinforcements from the Nihil, she ordered her crew to target the nearest Longbeam, the Karvoss Dawn. The Lourna Dee's laser turrets struck the Karvoss Dawn, causing significant damage. Firebird Leader Errington of Firebird Squadron reported the hit and ordered the other pilots to take evasive action. However, the shot had managed to strike a vulnerable area of the Karvoss Dawn, and the Longbeam exploded a moment later. Firebird Three guessed that the Nihil had hit a fuel line, while fellow pilots Jano Brayson and Teff mournfully commented on the number of people that had been aboard the Karvoss Dawn. Despite the destruction of the Karvoss Dawn, the battle ultimately ended in a victory for the Republic and the Jedi, who saved the surviving crew of the station and destroyed the Lourna Dee, taking many Nihil prisoner.[1]
Behind the scenes
The Karvoss Dawn appeared in the 2021 audio drama The High Republic: Tempest Runner, written by Cavan Scott[1] as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's Phase I.[6] The spelling of its name was confirmed in the 2022 script release of the audio drama. The Karvoss Dawn shares its name with[4] Karvoss II, a planet in the Star Wars Legends continuity[7] that was first mentioned in Cracken's Rebel Operatives, a 1994 West End Games sourcebook for Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game.[8]
