Kalen was a male senator who represented Chandrila and the Bormea sector. He was a family friend of the Mothma family and employed a young Mon Mothma as a personal assistant, who provided the elderly Senator Kalen with invaluable service.[1] On his first visit to Coruscant, Kalen was late for a session in the Galactic Senate. He decided to take an air taxi and offered the driver 100 credits if he would drive as fast as possible to reach the Senate Building in half the time. The driver succeeded and made it just in time, but Senator Kalen died on the way from a heart attack caused by the assertive driving.
Upon Kalen's sudden death, Mon Mothma was swiftly nominated and elected as his successor in the Senate in 33 BBY. At nineteen years of age, Mon Mothma became the youngest Human senator of the Republic's history and later fought for democracy as the leader of the Rebel Alliance after the fall of the Republic.[1]
