"The strongest stars have hearts of kyber."
Chirrut Îmwe[1]

Jyn's kyber pendant[2] was a kyber crystal necklace given to Jyn Erso by her mother Lyra, whilst on the run from the death troopers of the Imperial Director Orson Krennic who had come for them on Lah'mu.[1] It had the words "TRUST IN THE[2][4] FORCE"[1][5] written on it in Aurebesh—the very same words that Lyra told her daughter when she gave her the necklace as a parting gift minutes before her death.[1] The necklace was given to Lyra on Coruscant by a Ryn jeweler who appeared to be tailing her.[6]

During the following 13 years, Jyn kept the necklace as her most prized possession and s usually hid it under a scarf that she had been given for that purpose by Partisans leader Saw Gerrera, who had rescued and raised her for multiple years. Through her necklace, she was often reminded of her mother and it helped her not to give up. As the stormtroopers who captured her were unable to recognize it as a kyber crystal and instead mistook it for a piece of glass, Jyn was able to keep the necklace when she was imprisoned in a Imperial detention center on Wobani.[3]

Behind the scenes

Concept art for a kyber crystal necklace was originally made by Ryan Church for Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens.[7] It then later appeared in the anthology film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.[1]

There are conflicting accounts about how Lyra Erso obtained the pendant. Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel shows that she had been given it by a jeweler on Coruscant,[6] but the entry for it in the Databank on StarWars.com instead states that she instead took the crystal during their escape from Coruscant and only crafted it into a pendant while on Lah'mu,[4] and the novel Rebel Rising again instead states that Lyra had been gifted the necklace by her husband Galen sometime during his research as part of Project Celestial Power, although this part is presented as a memory of Jyn from when she was was still young.[3] Additionally the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story novelization had previously stated that Jyn got her pendant smuggled into the Detention Center,[8] while Rebel Rising depicts Jyn being allowed to keep her pendant after stormtroopers mistake it for a piece of glass.[3]
