- "Once we were brothers in the Force. But from the Hundred-Year Darkness were born the Sith."
- ―A Jedi
A splinter group of the Jedi Order was active prior to[3] around 5000 BBY.[2] Comprised of former Jedi who turned to the dark side of the Force, the splinter group opposed the Order's reverence for the light side of the Force.[5] The group was founded[1] as a sect of the Jedi religion[5] by a rogue Jedi who discovered that raw power could be achieved by devotion to the dark side. The Jedi High Council at the time repudiated the rogue Jedi's claim about unlocking the "true power" of the Force through the dark side, ultimately banishing the renegade from the Order. Nevertheless, his views[1] had a schismatic effect on the Order.[5] The dark Jedi gained a following of fellow outcasts for his new order as a result,[1] and they eventually founded the Sith Order[3] during the Hundred-Year Darkness.[4]

- ↑ 2.0 2.1 The Star Wars Book states that the Sith fought against the Jedi Order in a great era of conflicts around five thousand before the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, which corresponds to 5000 BBY per Star Wars: Timelines. As The Star Wars Book also states that the splinter group founded the Sith, they must have been active before around 5000 BBY.
