Jedi romance was a literature genre, some examples of which were set at outposts on the Galactic Republic frontier and featured Jedi and the themes of unrequited love and longing glances. Vel Carann, a scantech stationed aboard a monitoring station in the Hetzal system by 232 BBY, was an avid reader of Jedi romances, whereas her colleague Merven Getter did not understand the genre's appeal.

Description

Jedi romance was a genre of literature that existed[1] by 232 BBY[2] and featured members of the Jedi tradition of Force-users. Several Jedi romances were set at outposts on the Galactic Republic frontier, featured lightsaber combat, and described unrequited love and longing glances between their characters. In the view of Merven Getter, a Mirialan Republic scantech who was stationed on a monitoring station at the far edge of the Outer Rim Territories' Hetzal system and who had read a few Jedi romances, the lightsaber combat comprised the works' only action sequences and it was a clear substitute for what the romances' characters actually wanted to do.[1]

History

Merven Getter's superior, the scantech Vel Carann, was an avid reader of Jedi romances, which puzzled Getter. When,[1] at one point in 232 BBY,[2] the Mirialan observed Carann attentively reading something on a datapad, he assumed it was a Jedi romance, with the scantech also mentally noting that Carann was not supposed to be reading personal material on company time.[1]

Behind the scenes

Jedi romances were created for the 2021 novel Light of the Jedi, written by Charles Soule as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[1] Phase I.[3] Prior to the publication of Light of the Jedi, Jedi romances were mentioned in an excerpt from the novel published on StarWars.com on November 20, 2020.[4]
