An ionizer was a type of metallic-gray tool that consisted of a central pillar-like body of varying widths with thin protrusions ending in small spheres extending in three different layers from the body. The base of the body was wider, with a narrower spiked end being at the top of the device, above a cap placed atop the highest layer of protrusions.[1]
The junk dealer Watto owned an ionizer,[1] and in 32 BBY,[3] it sat on a pedestal by the backdoor of his junkshop[2] in the city of Mos Espa[1] on the planet Tatooine when the Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn led a group searching for a T-14 hyperdrive generator into the store.[2]
Behind the scenes
An ionizer appeared in the prequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace,[2] which was released on May 19, 1999.[4] In the current Star Wars canon, the tool was identified in the 2017 reference book Star Wars: The Visual Encyclopedia.[1] The name for the unit originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it was first used in the reference book Star Wars: Episode I The Visual Dictionary, written by David West Reynolds[5] and released on May 26, 1999.[6]
