An ion turret was a turret-mounted ion weapon that could be equipped to starships. The Rokana Raiders developed a technology that supercharged the ions used in ion weaponry. This was done by channeling ambient ionic energy into a ship's mounted ion turrets and ion missiles thus greatly increased the effectiveness of the weapons.[1] By 3 ABY,[2] this technology had been outlaws by the Galactic Empire.[1]

In 3 ABY,[2] the thief Kay Vess paid a starship mechanic and supplied them with the materials required to equip the Trailblazer, her EML-850 light freighter, with an IT-11 ion turret. Later that same year, Vess recovered Rokana Raiders' supercharged ion technology from an encryption sealed container in the Khepi system.[1]
