- "The New Republic was painfully slow in recognizing the real threat of the Imperial remnant until it was effectively too late. The return to this galaxy of Grand Admiral Thrawn proved to be a turning point in the balance of power between the neo-Imperial forces biding their time and the New Republic ones trying desperately to raise the alarm."
- ―Beaumont Kin, in his book The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire
The Imperial Remnant,[10] or the Imperial remnant,[1][3] also known as the neo-Imperial forces[1] or as the Remnant Empire,[11] was a large neo-Imperialist remnant faction of the Galactic Empire[2] that existed by 9 ABY.[9] Comprised of various smaller Imperial remnants, the Warlord leaders of each smaller remnant met in a Shadow Council to coordinate while maintaining the illusion of being unorganized remnant warlords, thereby hiding their strength.[2] One of the most highly placed officers and politicians within the Imperial remnant was Moff Gideon,[12] a member of the Shadow Council who commanded his remnant faction from a base on the abandoned planet Mandalore.[2]
Upon Grand Admiral Thrawn's return from his exile in the Far galaxy,[13] Thrawn waged a campaign against New Republic forces with the forces of the Imperial remnant, but was eventually defeated at by the New Republic Defense Force. Later, Chalm Plesk, a historian from the University of Coruscant, wrote the highly anticipated book "The Last War Against the Galactic Empire: On Deployment with the New Republic Fleet" which covered Thrawn's campaign, but its publication was blocked by military figures in the New Republic until the Hosnian Cataclysm. Beaumont Kin would later mention the book as well as Thrawn's Campaign in his own book "The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire"[1]
