The term illuminator was used for a range of illumination devices. This included a type of lamp that consisted of a dark blue, porous, ovoid with a silver protuberance at the top that sat in a silver dish atop a tripod of legs.[1] In 19 BBY,[3] this kind of illuminator sat on a small table beside a Naboo chair in the corner opposite the entry way to the bedroom of Senator Padmé Amidala of the planet Naboo in her apartment in the Senate apartment complex on the planet Coruscant.[2]
The term could also be applied to handheld devices such as those used by Kanjiklub members including Razoo Qin-Fee while they searched the Baleen-class heavy freighter Eravana[4] in 34 ABY.[5]
Behind the scenes
An illuminator first appeared in the prequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith,[2] which was released on May 19, 2005.[6] In the current Star Wars canon, the illuminator was identified in the 2015 Star Wars: The Force Awakens novelization by Alan Dean Foster.[4] The devices originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where they were first mentioned in the 1984 reference book A Guide to the Star Wars Universe, which was written by Raymond L. Velasco.[7]
