The IGP-440a ion turbine engine was an ion engine used in the ARC-170 Starfighter of Incom/Subpro. A large engine nacelle was placed behind the elongated fuselage of the ARC-170. The nacelle, which housed the ICP-440a, also served as the base of the left and right S-foil wings.[1]

The engine of the ARC-170 was equipped with an ion acceleration chamber and a propulsion nozzle in the rear, a reverse propulsion system and a heat dissipation port in the front. The ARC-170 starfighter split the S-foil into three wings to dissipate heat from IGP-440a engines. This unique split transverse wing was designed to unfold to expose the heat sink and allow the radiator to function.[2]
