The IF-120 landing craft, also known as Imperial Landing Force ship, was an Imperial starship designed by Sienar Fleet Systems for shuttling troops to a planet and providing support. Much larger than other craft of its type, the IF-120 was designed to serve as a mobile command base after landing. The IF-120 saw use during the Galactic Civil War, including on an expedition to rediscover the lost world of Seoul 5.
Characteristics
An IF-120 landing craft
The IF-120 landing craft was designed to serve as a troop transport, taking soldiers from orbit planetside. The design was based on the Lambda-class and Sentinel-class shuttles; but instead of having those models' folding wings, it had repulsors for stability. It had a much larger capacity—each IF-120 could hold up to 120 troops along with eight crew, 12 speeder bikes, two LAVr QH-7 Chariot speeders and a PX-4 Mobile Command Base—and was bulkier than other landing craft, and possessed extensive communications and sensor systems. After landing and deploying its troops and vehicles, the IF-120's interior could convert from transport configuration into a fully-functional mobile command base until the area was secured for larger and more permanent command facilities. Each IF-120 was also armed with double medium laser cannons and four antipersonnel heavy blaster cannons.[1]
History
Designed by Sienar Fleet Systems, the IF-120 landing craft saw use by the Galactic Empire as a troop transport during the Galactic Civil War.[1] One such landing craft was commanded by Captain Drezzel on a mission to discover the ancient lost planet Seoul 5 in 4 ABY, not long after the Empire's climactic defeat at Endor. Although the Imperial mission ultimately touched down upon Seoul 5, the ship and its crew were destroyed by a massive explosion of Seoularian crystals triggered by Rebel hero Han Solo.[2]
Behind the scenes
The IF-120 landing craft first appeared in Star Wars (1977) 84, written by Roy Richardson, illustrated by David Mazzucchelli and released in 1984.[2] Originally unidentified, its name was provided 25 years later in the 2009 Star Wars Roleplaying Game supplement Galaxy at War.[1]
