"Perhaps now you will allow the Republic to use your trade routes, and hostilities can come to an end."
"«Agreed. A treaty is in order.»"
―Padmé Amidala closes negotiations with Jabba the Hutt — 20?cb=20250116042720 ▶️ (file info)[1]

The Galactic Republic established a treaty with the Hutt Clan through the crime lord Jabba the Hutt during the Clone Wars.

Terms

The treaty ratified that the Hutt Clan would stay out of the active fighting of the war, with the Galactic Republic agreeing to not be the side to bring fighting into Hutt territory.[2] With the Republic having underestimated the expertise of the lawyers employed by the Hutt Clan, the treaty was also amended in such a skillful way that it gave the Hutts an ability to peek into the affairs of Republic space, whilst largely preventing the Republic from doing the same to the matters discussed in Hutt Space.[3]

By signing an official treaty with a criminal cartel, the Republic also inadvertently legitimized the Hutts' businesses and gave them a beachhead into the Core Worlds.[3]

History

Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi initially negotiated the treaty with Jabba, while Senator Padmé Amidala was able to secure the accord's ratification after exposing a Confederacy of Independent Systems plot against Jabba to kidnap his son and frame the Jedi Order for the crime.[1]
