- "The holo-torches flickered blue all around us."
- ―Marda Ro, in her journal
Holo-torches were holographic illumination devices used during the High Republic Era to generate hazy blue light. The throne hall of the ship known as the Gaze Electric was equipped with holo-torches, as well as holo-suns[1] by some point no earlier than 379 BBY,[2] when the ship's owner Marda Ro—the Evereni[1] founder of a group of pirates who would eventually become the Nihil[3]—met the Evereni siblings Vika and Velya Faer in the hall. During their encounter, the holo-torches and holo-suns were lit and illuminated the space. Holo-torches again bathed the throne hall in light during another interaction Ro had with Velya shortly after his sister's death.[1]
Later, Ro mentioned the holo-torches in a message[1] she[4] recorded for her descendants.[1] By 252 BBY,[5] during his youth, Ro's great-great-grandson Marchion Ro had listened to her memoirs, including the entries where holo-torches were mentioned.[4]
Behind the scenes
Holo-torches appeared in flashbacks in the short story "A Closed Fist Has No Claws," written by Tessa Gratton and published in the 2023 young-adult anthology The High Republic: Tales of Light and Life as a part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project.[1]

- ↑ The segment of "A Closed Fist Has No Claws" depicting a Jedi's death onboard the Gaze Electric takes place around 379 BBY per the reasoning here. Marda Ro met the Faers after the Jedi's death; therefore, she must have met them no earlier than 379 BBY.

As The High Republic: Temptation of the Force establishes she introduced Marchion Ro to Marda Ro's journal, he must have listened to it by that year.
