Herpetology was a scientific field that included the study of snakes. During the Imperial Period, Doctor Relan Smiff was awarded with the Herpetology Award by the Galactic Science Foundation.[1] Sometime between around 0 ABY and 1 ABY,[2] Smiff began to study and report that[1] the Mid Rim[3] planet Naboo's native fanned rawls had begun to grow larger. He reported sightings of giant fanned rawls in at least two locations and[1] correctly[4] believed that the snakes used the fans situated on the sides of their bodies to assist with swimming.[1]
Behind the scenes
The field of herpetology was mentioned in "Star Wars Galaxies: Bestiary – Naboo," an article published on the official website for Sony Online Entertainment's 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided.[1] In the real world, herpetology is a field of zoology centered around the study of amphibians and reptiles.[5]
