The Helas were a race of amphibious, nonsentient creatures native to the damp world of Enaleh.

Biology and appearance

They had eel-like bodies, with basket shaped heads with four jaw-like flaps and four tentacles. The Helas were born and matured underwater, then later, as adults, they took to the water-dense atmosphere of their planet. They were filter feeders, using their tentacles to detect their insect prey then strain it from the atmosphere using their mouths. The Helas lacked traditional wings, utilizing a biological repulsorlift field to lift them from the ground. [1]

Behavior

Helas lived in schools of approximately 100 individuals to provide protection against predators. Their natural predators were the slard. When mating, the female would fly low over a body of water and release eggs. She would then perform a series of aerial maneuvers to attract males who would dive into the water and fertilize the eggs.[1]

History

Smugglers found it profitable to provide helas to research institutions who were attempting to figure out the creature's ability to generate repulsorlift fields. They were occasionally found in zoos, but rarely survived long.[1]
