Heat dispersion vents were part of a starship's engineering system. Alongside deflector plates, they drew heat away from vital locations and discharged them into the vacuum of realspace.
When the second Death Star was being designed, the flaw of the thermal exhaust port was removed and replaced with a series of millimeter-wide heat dispersion ducts.[1]
