Hanno speeders were a type of speeder that was a precursor to the landspeeder. For a long time prior to the construction of Mos Espa Grand Arena on the desert planet Tatooine, thrill-seekers held free-for-all, no-holds-barred races in the natural canyon amphitheater at the edge of the Northern Dune Sea where the arena would eventually stand.[1]
These races initially used animal-drawn carts before Hanno Speeders took their place,[1] and according to legend, it was from these races that podracing first developed.[2] Podracers would eventually replace Hanno Speeders in the races by the start of the modern era of podracing[1] around a century before the Galactic Civil War.[3]
Behind the scenes
In the current Star Wars canon, hanno speeders were first mentioned in "Podracing on Tatooine," an article[2] written by Tim Veekhoven[4] in the "Guide to the Galaxy" department of the fifty-first issue of De Agostini's Star Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon magazine series,[2] which was published around December 23, 2015.[5] Hanno speeders originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where they were first mentioned in the 2000 reference book Inside the Worlds of Star Wars: Episode I, which was written by Kristin Lund.[6]
