Gypsum was a type of mineral.[1] Twisted crystals of gypsum, known as helicites, were found on Mimban[1] and Tatooine.[3] Owen Lars' graying hair looked like gypsum helicites.[4] The comet Resh 9376 was primarily composed of gypsum, granite, base ores (such as tin, iron, and lead), and ice.[2]

Gypsum was first mentioned in the 1976 novelization of the original trilogy film Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, ghostwritten by Alan Dean Foster.[4] It first appeared in the 1978 novel Splinter of the Mind's Eye, also written by Foster.[1]
