The grandstands also referred to as the grandstand and stands were the main complex of the Mos Espa Grand Arena.[2] They were cradled within a natural canyon amphitheater and consisted of many overcrowded seats.[1] The grandstand could hold more than 100,000 spectators. Wealthier residents and guests could afford VIP boxes.[2] Boxes included the Royal Box, Watto's box and the Commentary box.[1] The stands were seperated into more expensive stands which overlooked the finish line while the cheaper stands faced the Pit Hangar.[2] Multiple access points lead to underground areas for VIP parking. Pit droid work and storage areas as well as animal stalls were located below the grandstands as well. There were also shaded seats reserved for children but they were generally appropriated by gangsters and bounty hunters. After a number of spectators died from overheating, floating canopies were put up in a bid to prevent further adverse publicity, although the canopies give very little protection. Multiple refreshment booths, a monument for legendary racers as well as a race cantina were located at the top of the grandstands.[1]
Behind the scenes
Star Wars: The Complete Visual Dictionary, New Edition refers to both parts of the stands as the west stands which is likely a misprint.[2]
