Gale Torg also known as Galen Torg was a human male sergeant assigned to guard and escort senators and dignitaries who visited the Alliance to Restore the Republic's headquarters in the Great Temple on Yavin 4. He carried a DH-17 blaster pistol and wore the uniform of Alderaanian consular security, which featured a service helmet with flash visor and integral comlink and a multi-pocketed spacer vest of Corellian cut.[1]

In 0 BBY,[2] the Alliance managed to destroy the Galactic Empire's planet-killing superweapon, the Death Star, in the Yavin system. During the ceremony held to honor the Heroes of Yavin at the Great Temple, Torg served as a Rebel Honor Guard, standing in front of the audience room's entrance.[3]

Gale Torg first appeared, retroactively, in the 1977 film Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.[3] The character then went onto appear—again unnamed—in the film's 2016 prequel, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.[4]

Gale Torg's introduction into canon was brought about by his origins in Star Wars Legends as Galen Torg,[5] who was identified as one of the Rebel Honor Guards seen in A New Hope.[6] The name was first used in 1995's Galaxy Guide 1: A New Hope, where the name was simply used to represent a typical rebel soldier,[7] before being connected to the film character by the Star Wars Customizable Card Game.[6] In using the name for a character seen in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Star Wars: Rogue One: The Ultimate Visual Guide author Pablo Hidalgo realized that the film already included a prominent character,[5] the scientist[4] Galen Walton Erso, with the first name Galen, so he decided to change Torg's first name.[5]
