As nominator. Master Jon (War Room) Friday, December 30, 2011, 18:02 UTC
For the record, I removed the {{Delete}} tag because I thought this was a legitimate IU unit of measurement, as we have articles for other units (Inch comes to mind as an example). Now that the Death Star reference has been provided below, this is the best option. Grand Moff Tranner Imperial Department of Military Research (Comlink) 21:07, December 30, 2011 (UTC)

  1. Definitely. We don't know for sure that this is indeed a unit for energy at all.--Cal JediInfinite Empire (Personal Comm Channel) 01:30, December 31, 2011 (UTC)

  1. We know watts exist as a unit of measurement (see, e.g., pg. 63 pf Star Wars: Complete Cross-Sections). We know that units of measurement take prefixes to change their relative values (e.g., we've seen meters, centimeters, and kilometers used to measure length and distance); and we know that Basic, at least as it is presented to us, works just like English. To assume that a mention of gigawatt doesn't mean what it means in English, even if that mention is being used metaphorically, is to be actively disingenuous. jSarek 09:19, January 4, 2012 (UTC)
  2. Per Jase, maybe redirect to watt. DD97Which bear is best? 14:15, January 4, 2012 (UTC)
  3. Created an article for watt. Based on the evidence provided, I agree we have enough pieces of information to warrant a full keep, provided the gigawatt article is given a clearly-explained reference note similar to jSarek's explanation, because it doesn't stand on its own based only on the Death Star reference. Toprawa and Ralltiir 21:46, January 4, 2012 (UTC)
  4. Tope has convinced me. I do feel this should be redirected to watt, but that's better discussed in a CT for all of the similarly-prefixed units like centimeter, etc. Master Jonathan (Training Room) Wednesday, January 4, 2012, 22:01 UTC

  9. Probably better to merge with watt, but I'll vote to keep for now. —Silly Dan (talk) 12:58, January 5, 2012 (UTC)
  10. Albeit somewhat reluctantly; this seems to be the best option right now. Jonjedigrandmaster (Talk) 15:11, January 7, 2012 (UTC)
  11. I'd prefer a redirect to watt though. 1358 (Talk) 15:26, January 7, 2012 (UTC)
  12. It takes 1.21 Gigawatts to edit this page. Corellian PremierRobotechAll along the watchtower 03:26, January 8, 2012 (UTC)
  13. What the hell is a jigowatt?! Either way, canon usages mean it is a canon measurement that at the very least might just need to be merged to watt, but I don't support outright deletion. -- Riffsyphon1024 02:50, January 10, 2012 (UTC)

Discussion

  • The only mention of this term in the novel Death Star describes the character Vil Dance: "He flashed her that gigawatt smile." We have no IU description or definition of the term beyond whatever inference we may draw based on unconnected real-world standards, which is what the article is using to describe the term as a "unit of power and energy." The novel in no way makes such a literal assertion, and under strict IU interpretation, we know nothing about what the term means other than it can be used to describe someone with a beaming smile. This would not be the first article we've deleted for this exact type of fanony interpretation. As an alternative to outright deletion, may I instead recommend redirecting the article to List of phrases and slang with a brief description of how the source uses the word?
