501st Special Operations Detachment (talk - history - links - logs)

Rationale for nomination

When this article was first created, it was deleted several times as not notable enough for an article. Early versions of the article read like a recruitment ad for the group, and did not explain to me why it was notable on its own separately from the rest of the 501st Legion (fan organization). It appears to just be a special interest group within the 501st which specializes in EU costuming. —Silly Dan (talk) 11:26, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Rationale for undeletion

Basically, though I don't think a separate article is needed here, I'm also not sure that it's a candidate for speedy deletion. I think we'd be better served with a bit of open discussion, which may lead to clarification of Wookieepedia:Notability with regards to fan activity. —Silly Dan (talk) 11:26, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Discussion (7 Keep/13 Merge/7 Delete)

  • Merge to 501st Legion (fan organization) for above-stated reasons. —Silly Dan (talk) 11:26, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
  • Merge/delete per Silly Dan. --Imperialles 11:41, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
  • Merge or delete. Accept result as precedent. Also, I'm semi-protecting this thread because I foresee sock and/or meat puppetry. -- Darth Culator (Talk) 11:59, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
  • Merge or delete, and apply to all other supplementary 501st articles. Thefourdotelipsis 12:29, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
  • Merge or delete per 4dot. Green Tentacle (Talk) 13:59, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
  • Merge/delete Everyone loves the 501st, but that doesn't mean that it gives blanket exception to notability rules to anything semi-related. If this article was about a sub-group of any other fan group, it wouldn't stand a chance of notability on its own. As far as other articles in the category, look at something like this, for example. Not encyclopedic at all. Most of these are nothing but recruiting posters. The 501st Legion article itself could include a list of legions, and if any of them are semi-notable, a brief description of them there, but I see almost nothing notable on its own. • Wow I'm [Redacted by administration] and didn't remember I'd actually already voted. My new comment was how tired I am of seeing orphaned and dead-end 501st pages. Make your own wiki or something, but I still say merge this particular one because of near-notability, but delete as a general rule. Wildyoda 03:58, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
  • Merge or delete per everyone. Chack Jadson Talk 15:43, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
  • Merge. It's long been my opinion that fan topics should be restricted to one article per subject. One article per fanfilm, one article per website, one article per costuming group. Havac 17:33, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
  • Merge all of them into the 501st article. -- Ozzel 19:03, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
    • I'm gonna switch to a keep here, given jSarek's point below, but I think that our main 501st article needs to be significantly improved to give an overview of all its groups with links to their respective articles. Orphaned pages on some of these groups don't do much good. -- Ozzel 03:48, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
  • Merge them All into the 501st Article. --Dark Lord Xander (Embrace The Dark Side!)Neo-Crusader emblem 09:48, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
  • Keep because it's a unit within a unit which is so unit-like that it has its own logo. KEJ 12:39, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
  • Merge them into 501st article for non-relevance. A unit within a unit is extremely commonplace, especially among military units, which are divided into battalions, companies, brigades, divisions, squadrons, regiments, corps, armies, and the ever popular Phalanx. Atarumaster88 Jedi Order (Talk page) 23:59, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
  • Keep. Per discussion on the talk page, meets or exceeds all of our notability criteria, regardless of whether it's a separate unit. Merging this will essentially require, for consistency's sake, merging all other subsidiaries of other webpages into the articles of their respective parents (which means, for instance, merging our articles on the Jedi Council Forums and Star Wars Technical Commentaries into TheForce.Net). jSarek 01:05, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
  • Keep It is a gruop of special characters of the EU. This article explain the group,as part of the 501st. and why all this characters a grouped there.--Xendor 04:08, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
    • Wrong 501st. This page is about subsidiaries of the real-world 501st Legion costuming and charitable organization, not the EU clonetrooper/stormtrooper legion. jSarek 04:13, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
  • Keep as individual article per the talk page and jSarek. If it meets notability requirements, why is this even disputed? -- Riffsyphon1024 04:16, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
    • A, because the notability requirements are too loose. B, just because it barely meets the [Redacted by administration] requirements doesn't make it a good article. -- Darth Culator (Talk) 11:58, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
  • Keep, Per Riffsyphon1024. --Jedimca0(Do or Do Not, There is No Try) 07:45, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
  • Merge/delete. The 501st has their own website which we link to, and on which they can discuss all of their minutiae. We're not their web host. Graestan Jedi Order (This party's over) 14:18, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
  • Merge. Per Dan. Unit 8311 18:56, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
  • Keep per Riffsyphon1024 and KChristley points on the talk page. —Xwing328(Talk) 16:52, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
  • Keep I see no reason why the various 501st garrisons shouldn't have their own pages. Kuralyov 03:59, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
  • Merge Definitely should be merged. - JMAS 04:37, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Comments

  • A consensus seems to be emerging for a merge and/or delete. However, I suspect a number of 501st sites might fall under the "notable in their own right clause" from Wookieepedia:Notability of fan projects: "Websites as big as TheForce.Net can have more than one article: not so much because they are more important, but because the Jedi Council Forums, the Star Wars Technical Commentaries, and some of the other projects it hosts would be obviously notable even if hosted on their own website." jSarek 05:52, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
    • I would also point out that the original author has written a defense of the article on this page's talk page. jSarek 07:25, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
  • So what's happened with this vote? It stands 7/7 on keep/delete but 13 for merge so I will carry out that action now. -- Riffsyphon1024 17:33, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
