Clarifying some infoboxes, part 1? Loqiical (talk) 11:47, 26 December 2022 (UTC)

Proposal

  1. For all relevant starship and vehicle infobox templates, swap |manufacturer= and |designer=. Assuming real life, design comes before manufacture. Some templates are still lacking |designer= altogether. Additionally, change the corresponding text to "Manufacturer(s)" and "Designer(s)" respectively.
  2. For all relevant templates, replace |type= with |type= and change the corresponding text to "type" in read mode. Sources indicate that classifications like "Star Destroyer", "space station" or "walker" refer to the term "type".[1][2][3]
  3. For all relevant templates, ensure that the field |shield gen= has corresponding text in read mode "Shield generator(s)" because this is more specific than "Shielding". An extra field could be added to show the type of shield, if this is necessary.
  4. For all relevant templates, change the corresponding text of |hull= to "Hull material(s)" to avoid confusion. It would still be quite a vague field.
  5. For all relevant templates, replace |complement= with |vehicles= and change the corresponding text to "Vehicle(s) carried". Some sources use the term "complement" for both vehicles carried and the crew specifications.[2] This term should not be used. Additionally, in real life the term "complement" generally refers to crew.[4]
  6. For all relevant templates, change the corresponding text of |crew= to "Crew size" to avoid confusion.
  7. For all relevant templates, replace |namedcrew= with |notablecrew= and change the corresponding text to "Notable crew" because currently not all entries in this field are named characters.   8. When multiple configurations need to be noted in an infobox, use bold without indentation. An example is T-65B X-wing starfighter.

Discussion

  • Good suggestions, all (though I wonder if we should maybe just do away with the Notable crew fields?). For the last point, could you demonstrate how you'd imagine it to look with comprehensive referencing? Imperators II(Talk) 12:07, 26 December 2022 (UTC)
    • For the notable crew, I was just looking at Executor/Legends since that page is under review and has this field filled out. I've added references for the infobox; luckily in this case the source specifies different loadouts, but otherwise we may need to write out justifications.   • I see a proposal to do away for the role field for individual vehicles has been added :P But converted vehicles, including ones whose role is vastly different than that of their class in general, exist, don't they? Imperators II(Talk) 14:49, 16 January 2023 (UTC)

  • I agree with your most or your proposals and I think they would definitly be usefull in clarifying what the fields actualy mean. The only thing I disagree with is the elimination of the role field, becuase there are unique starships with no class, ie Gilagimar, and I think it is important for their role to be documented in the infobox. -ThrawnChiss7 ThrawnHS Alliances Assembly Cupola 18:45, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
