I've spent a lot of time updating the Timeline of media and during a discussion about combined timelines of books and novels (but not comics, etc.) I came across a project started up by User:Morbus Iff back in 2011 that ratcheted up the functionality of the page several levels, allowing you to pick what media types you wanted to view. There was a previous Senate Hall discussion at Forum:SH:Making a better "Timeline of media" where the functionality needed was added to the MediaWiki:Common.js and Morbus Iff had started moving over the media from Timeline of media, but it petered out at that point.
The functionality of this page is way beyond what we have currently, with the ability to filter out media types, sort by media type or year or author or title, section editing (though I added that to the current timeline), dates are easier to find, etc.
The original project is located at User:Morbus Iff/Timeline of media.
I transferred all the current information on the Timeline of media page to User:Tainb'ocu'chulainn/Sandbox Timeline in the new formatting (regular expressions are amazing things), and I'd appreciate some feedback on it with regards to the functionality and style. The columns are slightly different, and could be changed back and I'm thinking of possibly making each era hidable.
I still have to fill in the gaps in dates and authors, which I should be able to finish in a day or two, but I wanted to get the feedback ball rolling. Tainb'ocu'chulainn (talk) 14:42, February 7, 2013 (UTC)
The new timeline - User:Tainb'ocu'chulainn/Sandbox Timeline - is now fully up to date with the current Timeline of media. Tainb'ocu'chulainn (talk) 20:45, February 11, 2013 (UTC)
Dates and Games
I like what you're doing with this Tainb'ocu'chulainn. I really enjoy this format but there are some things just in terms of new dates and some games that aren't there. Galactic Battlegrounds is from 3,000 BBY to 4 ABY and Clone Campaigns is from 22 BBY to 6 ABY and there are some newer dates from Essential Reader's Companion. If I should do this I will. And I hope this is where I should be posting this. --Darth R2-D2, Dark Lord of the Droids (talk) 21:22, February 11, 2013 (UTC)
- The information on my page was taken from the current Timeline of media, so anything that is missing is also missing there. If you want to add any media, I'd appreciate you doing it in both places so both timelines will be synchronized. A definite benefit of the show/hide feature of the new page is that it will be much easier to visually check the Timeline of media against the books, comics, short story, etc. timelines. What has been done with this is great. but I do think that the Youth/Childrens books should have their own color and ability to hide. I know what I am suggesting is quite a bit more elaborate. I have been working on the correct timeline for the Short Stories, Youth, novellas, and novels. You can see what I have accomplished so far here: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/User:ExarKunLives/Sandbox--ExarKunLives (talk) 15:22, February 12, 2013 (UTC)
- Adding another category is pretty easy actually. It just needs to be defined in the category table, then each individual entry would need it's class and background-color changed. At the moment, I'm less concerned with the content of the page (adding Youth category or missing video games) and more concerned with the presentation of the information of the information that was already present, e.g. I'm not really happy with the look of the inline notes - there's too much white space involved in the bullet point right now. Which would you prefer I edit the actual or yours? --Darth R2-D2, Dark Lord of the Droids (talk) 20:54, February 12, 2013 (UTC)
- Both would be best, but if you only did one, then do the current Timeline and not mine. I'm tracking the current one to keep mine up-to-date until it's either approved or denied. Tainb'ocu'chulainn (talk) 15:04, February 13, 2013 (UTC)
Browser functionality
The click to hide buttons don't seem to do anything in Chrome or Firefox. Also, ideally the sortable columns would have the small up and down icons that show which whey they're being sorted. —Xwing328(Talk) 20:02, February 15, 2013 (UTC)
- What browser versions are you using? I'm assuming you are using the Monobook skin, right? I use the Wikia skin and the buttons work fine and the up and down icons show up in IE 64 bit 9.0, Chrome and Firefox 15.0.1. I tested with the Monobook skin in all three browsers and the buttons worked fine, but while the sorting worked ok, the up and down icons didn't show up. I'll take a look at it, but someone who has spent more time scripting on Wikia might be better able to figure it out. I believe Grunny helped with the coding on the first try. - Sorry about the delay responding. The "click to hide" links are really working for you? I don't see anything happening. I'm running Firefox 18.0.2 on OS X 10.8.2. I'm not sure of the versions of Chrome and ff I used at work that also didn't seem to do anything. As for sorting the tables, yes that seems to work, it's just the icons have gone missing like you said. —Xwing328(Talk) 05:47, February 22, 2013 (UTC)
- The "click to hide" links are working fine for me in Firefox 19 and Chromium on Linux, and they also work fine in Firefox 19 and Chrome 25 on Windows 7. Are you seeing any JS errors in your console? Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 08:15, February 24, 2013 (UTC)
- It seems that the issue with the up and down sorting icons not showing up in the Monobook skin stems from the Prettytable template. You can see in the table for the Crew of Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. I don't know how to fix that, but I would love an explanation of how to do it. Are there any other reasons not to take this live? Tainb'ocu'chulainn (talk) 17:33, April 10, 2013 (UTC)
- Added the .chevron definition to Monobook.css and the up and down arrows are back. Green Tentacle (Talk) 17:59, April 10, 2013 (UTC)
- Awesome sauce. Can I move forward with this now or do I need some kind of consensus approval? Tainb'ocu'chulainn (talk) 19:24, April 10, 2013 (UTC)
