The following is a minor additional proposal to the now-passed Forum:CT:Clone trooper naming update. The proposal is that clone troopers will not receive the "nickname" template on their pages, instead pages named at their chosen name/nickname will just be left with that there, no template needed. The Clone Wars pushed the idea that clones see the names as chosen names, even if sometimes called "nicknames".

Beyond that, we already remove the template for those who have deserted. Last I checked, a nickname doesn't cease being a nickname if you quit your job. We are already moving into the idea these are more than nicknames Editoronthewiki (talk) 18:47, 3 December 2023 (UTC)

  3. The wording of the template as being "not identified with an official name" just doesn't make sense for them anyway. Panther436 (talk) 19:27, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
  4. I'm particularly reminded of Sister, because EK intentionally avoided assigning her a CT number so that she would only ever be called by the name she chose to go by, after being named by her brothers. It's definitely a name and not a nickname.—spookywillowwtalk 00:20, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

How to write clone names in articles

The following will only take affect if the above passes. In articles, it is common practice to write clone trooper name along the lines of CLONE NUMBER "NAME IN QUOTES". For example, an article would say CT-7567 "Rex" when referring to Rex. If the above passes, I propose we change the practice to remove the quotes in the name. So, in articles, it would say CT-7567 Rex. I could see some users disagreeing so feel free to discuss here. Editoronthewiki (talk) 19:11, 3 December 2023 (UTC)

EDIT: one user has requested an option to just refer to clones by their name on article, number not needed. If we are to title the page the name and not label it a nickname, the argument goes, why mention the number on unrelated pages. I will add that option Editoronthewiki (talk) 19:35, 3 December 2023 (UTC)

EDIT 2: I also want to note, I do not think this section will be going to CT. Someone can ask it to if they really want to, but this is just laying down a new status quo. We don't list how to write Chiss names into policy, we just follow common practice, for example. Basically this discussion is about changing common practice in the wake of the new decisions Editoronthewiki (talk) 01:01, 9 December 2023 (UTC)

Might need additional clarification than just 'CT-7567 Rex' in practice but yeah the quotes are not needed. Panther436 (talk) 19:27, 3 December 2023 (UTC)

Those for status quo

Just use the clone's name on its own

  1. You know what, why not, lets go all the way Editoronthewiki (talk) 19:36, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
  2. Their names are enough IMO. I don't see why their numbers are really relevant on someone else's article. Panther436 (talk) 23:37, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
  3. Something like "Clone Captain Rex" is generally preferable, if only for simplicity's sake, unless mentioning "CT-7567" is relevant (such as documenting when characters specify the designation number in dialogue). OOM 224 (he/him) 16:32, 7 December 2023 (UTC)

Additional evidence against the change

  • I support the change, as evidenced by my vote, I feel it is more in-keeping with how story material treats the clones. However, I will note that the sourcebook The Star Wars Book introduces Rex this way: in its file on him, he is given the name CT-7567 "Rex"[1] Editoronthewiki (talk) 19:32, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
    • If option three ends up passing I think this would actually avoid all problems Editoronthewiki (talk) 19:35, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
    • This also accounts for Rex's whole life, including time in the rebellion, so it didn't stop us before lol Editoronthewiki (talk) 19:39, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
