Hey everyone,

I'm a few months late on creating this, but here goes:

The Redux page. It was created by the Inquisitorius as a means of reviewing currently-existing Featured articles that either a) Receive a huge addition when the subject appears in a new work (we're talking really big additions, like when Daric LaRone doubled in size after Choices of One came out), or b) Receive a very big copy-edit that changes the entire article significantly (this happened to Jace Dallin and Sagoro Autem last year, who both got facelifts in order to meet current standards). The logic behind the Redux page was that Featured articles shouldn't contain huge amounts of content that hasn't been reviewed by anyone.

While a good idea, the Redux page ended up being largely ignored and forgotten about. At INQ Meeting 49, we discussed ways to increase activity on the Redux page. The solution with which we came up was: Open up reviewing and voting to the entire community. It's always been limited to INQs, but the community is filled with talented writers and reviewers.

We're not talking simply amending the Redux page to allow "regular user" votes, though. That wouldn't accomplish much, as the page would still be very easy to ignore or just simply miss entirely. We're talking something that would make the review pages much more visible --- adding them to the FAN page.

Here's the basic proposal:

  • When the Inquisitorius sends a Featured article to Redux (which, don't worry, isn't too regular of an occurrence), it will be added to the bottom of the FAN page. The nine articles currently on the Redux page would be added to the bottom of the FAN page immediately if this CT passes.
  • The nomination would look different than a regular nom, including a diff link showing how much has changed since it first achieved FA status, and a note that it's a current FA undergoing redux. If it's a case like Daric LaRone above, a note would be included clarifying that it's OK to only review the new additions, although users can review the entire article if they wish.
  • Reviewing and voting would be open to the entire community. Like on the RFAN page, four votes would be needed for the nom to pass, with at least two coming from INQs.
  • If the article has outstanding objections for a period of four weeks, it will be removed from the page and stripped of its FA status pending a removal vote supported by at least three INQs.
    • I say four instead of three because FAs undergoing INQ review typically have one month between meetings to be fixed up before they're stripped of their FA status.
    • I also think it's better to strip them of their status straight off rather than send them back to regular INQ review, else we could potentially end up with a never-ending circle of articles being removed from Redux, then having the outstanding objections addressed, then being added back to Redux, etc, etc.

Those are the four basic components of this proposal. The benefits: Articles undergoing redux would be much more visible and less likely to be ignored; the entire community would be able to review them and have a say rather than just the INQs; Featured articles that receive major additions/amendments would be checked by at least four sets of extra eyes to ensure that they remain top-quality. The only detriment I can think of is that it would add more noms to the FAN page, but since the FAN page has been pretty consistently around thirty noms for months, a few more certainly can't hurt.

  7. EVERY SINGLE ARTICLE on Redux has been there since 2011. If we aren't going to change this moribund process somehow, we'd be just as well off ditching it. Let's try the former option first. jSarek (talk) 09:52, July 28, 2012 (UTC)
