I think that we need a creation log for new user accounts like on Wikipedia. With this, we can keep track on the number of new users. This tactic can be useful against sockpuppets like the infamous SuperShadow attack, the spammer who created multiple user accounts and the On Wheels vandal who moved several mainly Jedi character articles to On Wheels. What do you think? MyNz 4:33, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
- Sounds helpful to me. - Breathesgelatin 06:57, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
- Should we prevent new users from uploading images, moving pages and creating new articles until they agree to certain conditions or proven themselves to be worth of it. For the first few days of having joined, they should be put under close supervision when editing. Maybe we should make copyright violation posters redeem themselves by rebuilding the article. - Not a bad idea, but who's going to keep track of all this? And, regarding the creation log—that's something that would have to be coded into MediaWiki, which makes it no small task (I'm not positive about this, however). I think the best idea is to just continue patrolling the Recent Changes page and stay with the system we have (note: I've found the fastest ways to report vandals are the IRC channel and using the {{tl|vip}} template). Alternatively, if vandalism increases, I think it would be a good idea for featured articles on the Main Page to be semi-protected—protected from edits by anons and very new users. This is definitely possible; Wikipedia uses it regularly. RMF 18:24, 3 April 2006(UTC)
- We don't have the semi-protect option; either it's lock the page entirely, or lock it from moves only. StarNeptune 20:25, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

- Also, regarding the User creation log: there is already a MediaWiki extension for it, so it's possible (on Wikipedia, look under "extensions". However, edits to the MediaWiki namespace require an admin, and I'm not even really sure where to find the actual extension (I know who the author is, Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason, but I can't seem find it on Meta).
