Firefighter battle droids,[2] also known as firefighting battle droids,[7] or B1 firefighter droids,[8] were specialized B1-series battle droids equipped with enhanced heat shielding[9] that were programmed and equipped to fight fires. Notable for their distinctive paint and heavy backpacks,[2] which featured the numbers 72066 running down either side,[5] they carried fire hoses that sprayed fire-repellent foam.[2] They also had small, built-in fire extinguishers.[6] They could also be used for security.[10]

Characteristics

Firefighter battle droids were regular B1s that were remodeled to be effective at fighting fires within Separatist warships and installations.[5] They were developed by Baktoid Combat Automata for cost reasons, being easier to remodel B1 droids for firefighting rather than develop a specialized firefighter droid.[10] They had masculine programming, black sensors and dark gray plating.[5] Their plating was adorned with red highlights and reflective yellow stripes,[1] which was fireproof,[10] and made them more visible in smoky conditions. They did have combat training,[1] albeit limited, they could spray fire-repellent foam on the ground so their opponents would slip.[10] The firefighter battle droids received specialized programming that helped them respond to emergencies, while altered backpacks held their firefighting gear.[1] The firefighter droids were equipped with a fire hose[2] and a fire extinguisher.[6] Their hoses could emit a pressurized foam,[1] and their backpacks had a supply of fire-resistant chemicals. As B1s were considered to not be particularly intelligent, they would sometimes be knocked over by the recoil of their own hose.[10]

History

During the Clone Wars,[5] in 22 BBY,[11] several firefighter battle droids served aboard the Malevolence, a Subjugator-class heavy cruiser that served as the flagship of General Grievous, where they attempted to extinguish the fires caused by damage the ship had sustained in an earlier battle. They were also deployed in one of the hangars when Senator Padmé Amidala's captured yacht self-destructed, though their attempts to put out the flaming wreck proved less than stellar.[5] Later, an entry on firefighter battle droids written by Captain Jikesh Valia was included in "Neyo's Almanac of Clankers," a survival compendium sent out by Commander Neyo that listed notable battle droids.[10]

During or after 34 ABY,[12] R0-GR, the self-proclaimed last of the B1 battle droids, included the firefighter units in his book droidography. In the book, R0-GR claimed the firefighters were brave and that it was a result of them being from the B1-series.[9]

Behind the scenes

Firefighter battle droids first appeared in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars season one episode, "Destroy Malevolence," which aired on October 17, 2008.[13]

Multiple sources state that the droids were 1.91 meters tall.[3][6] However, Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Character Encyclopedia - Join the Battle! states that the droids were 1.93 meters,[1] as does Star Wars - Das offizielle Magazin 118.[10]

The firefighters droids' reflective paint stripes are meant to resemble a firefighter's uniform.[7]
