- "Now, that is a work of art."
"Looks like an old Republic tank, used during the Clone Wars." - ―Sabine Wren and Kanan Jarrus upon spotting the AT-TE
Rex's AT-TE, also known as the Modified AT-TE Walker, was a modified All Terrain Tactical Enforcer that was commanded by former Clone Captain Rex. He, alongside Clone Commanders Wolffe and Gregor, retired to Seelos and modified the AT-TE. The clones spent their days relaxing in the AT-TE's interior.
Years later, Force-Sensitive Outcast Ahsoka Tano instructed the Spectres fly to Seelos to find Rex and bring him to Phoenix Cell of the Rebellion so he could help them fight the Galactic Empire. After the walker was destroyed during a battle, Wolffe and Gregor moved into an AT-AT.
Description
- "Didn't you hear? The Emperor said the clone army outserved our purpose and retired us. Now we spend our days just telling stories and slinging for joopas."
- ―Rex to Ezra Bridger
The clones modified the main cannon into an energy rod and reel to sling for joopas.
The trio of Clone Captain Rex and Clone Commanders Wolffe and Gregor modified an All Terrain Tactical Enforcer for repurposed function in their retirement. While traveling the dusty plains[2] of the desert planet Seelos,[8] the clones used their modified AT-TE as both a mobile home and a hunting platform.[2] The durable vehicle had tough armor, enabling it to withstand many harsh environments, such as Seelos.[5] The clones spent their days relaxing in the AT-TE's interior, which was stripped of some of its military hardware to make room for bunk beds and a kitchen.[1]
The walker did retain the standard AT-TE's six legs and magnetic feet.[5] However, much of the tank's exterior was modified.[7] Handrails and ladders were installed to make room for balconies, walkways and decks.[1] The ladders enabled the clones to travel between the top and lower decks of the AT-TE,[5] while the railed walkways were adorned with lanterns and bug catchers,[2] the caught bugs were a great source of protein for the clones. A pulpit was attached to the front walkway of the walker to look out for joopas,[5] large worm-like creatures that were native to Seelos.[1] The clones also added a landing pad to the roof of the AT-TE.[7]
The main mass-driver cannon was adapted into a rod and reel for a long laser line, enabling the clones to catch joopas. The repurposed gunner station served as the laser line reel controls. The laser line held the joopa, directing the line through the laser line guide loop, while the cannons blasted it.[5] Even with the main cannon's modifications, it could still fire projectiles[7] through the vented projectile cannon tip. A pair of outrigger towing booms, each with a hook, as well as a boom and winch for hauling the joopas were added to each side of the walker.[5] The six[5] Maad-21 heavy laser cannon turrets[4] were also slightly altered from the standard AT-TE.[5]
History
Tracking the lost commanders
- "How in all the galaxy is that droid gonna find your friend?"
"Well, I heard he was last seen in the Seelos system. You can start there." - ―Ahsoka Tano to Ezra Bridger while Sabine Wren inspected the tactical droid head
In 18 BBY,[9] Galactic Emperor Palpatine ordered the decommissioning of the Clone Army,[10] in favor of eager conscripted recruits[11] from innumerable worlds.[12] Soon after, Rex, Wolffe and Gregor retired to the dusty and remote planet Seelos; a world in the Kwymar sector of the Outer Rim[5] that was known for its harsh terrain, salty plains[13] and barren flats.[14] While on Seelos, the clones had no empires or clankers to fight. Therefore, they lived in peace for a few years, enjoying long days of slinging for joopas in the modified AT-TE. Wolffe and Gregor seemed content with their new lives in the walker, but as much as Rex wanted to leave the battlefield, the old soldier knew he still had some fight left in him.[8]
Ahsoka handed Sabine the head of an old tactical droid.
In 4 BBY,[15] former Jedi Padawan and Force-Sensitive Outcast Ahsoka Tano informed the Spectres of the Rebellion's Phoenix Cell that she had heard reports Rex was last seen in the Seelos system. Tano instructed the Spectres to fly to the planet and use the head of an old T-series tactical droid to find him. After Sabine Wren repaired the head, restoring its power, the droid scanned for a signal while simultaneously listing a set of digits over and over again: 7567. The Spectres followed the source of the signal to Rex's AT-TE. Upon arriving at the old walker, Wren commented it was a work of art, while former Jedi Padawan Kanan Jarrus told his crewmates it looked like an old Republic tank from the Clone Wars, before he landed the Phantom by the walker's back door.[7]
On the back balcony, Rex ordered Wolffe to cease fire.
Rex walked out of the walker's modified sliding back door followed by Wolffe and Gregor. After Ezra Bridger asked him if the numbers 7567 meant anything to him, he replied that they were his birth number. Upon realizing the great commander they were sent to find was a clone, Jarrus ignited his lightsaber. In response, Wolffe instinctively fired his DC-15A blaster rifle, while Gregor drew his blaster, until Rex ordered both his brothers to stand down. Rex reminded his brothers that it was the Empire, rather than the Jedi, who had betrayed them. After Bridger explained that Rex's former Jedi Commander Ahsoka Tano was the one who sent them to Seelos, he gained the clones' trust, who in turn welcomed the Spectres on board the walker, with the Spectres landing the Phantom on the walker's landing pad.[7]
The Spectres try to recruit the clones
- "Wait. You don't like the Empire, do you?"
"Well, the Empire certainly is not the Republic, but you can't do anything about that."
"You could fight."
"Sorry, son. My days as a soldier are over." - ―Ezra Bridger and Rex
The Spectres talk with Gregor on one of the outside walkways.
Inside the AT-TE, Bridger told Rex the rebels were trying to fight the Empire, but they were outnumbered. Rex told Bridger in response he was not much help to anyone anymore. As Emperor Palpatine said the clone army had served its purpose, Rex, Wolffe and Gregor spent their time telling stories and slinging for joopas. Jarrus in frustration said their trip was a waste, before departing the cabin. After Rex told Bridger his days of fighting were over, the Jedi Padawan requested the captain assemble a list of bases the rebels could use. He instructed the Spectres to wait on the walker's exterior, while he prepared the list. Despite Wolffe's hesitance to aid the Jedi out of fear of the Empire, Gregor decided he was going slinging. He spoke with the Spectres on the back balcony, where he offered them a deal. In exchange for receiving the locations of the bases, the Gregor tasked Garazeb Orrelios with catching an elusive joopa, a creature large enough to feed the clones for a year.[7]
As Wolffe viewed the Jedi as a threat,[16] he sent a binary transmission to the Empire reporting their presence. Shortly afterwards, an Imperial Navy officer on the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer the Relentless reported to Imperial Security Bureau (ISB) Agent Alexsandr Kallus that they received the binary transmission from the clones. Kallus commented that Seelos was a remote system and in response, Admiral Kassius Konstantine questioned if all the clones had been decommissioned. The officer confirmed the clone army had been decommissioned and remarked that although Wolffe's CT number matched, he had a record of delusional distress. Therefore, Kallus ordered the officer to send a probe to investigate.[7]
Ezra watches as Rex confronts Kanan about Order 66.
Inside the Phantom, Bridger asked Jarrus why he did not trust Rex and told Jarrus the clones were not dangerous. Jarrus rejected Bridger's opinion and said the clones could be a threat to them. Jarrus said the clones betrayed him and his master, and the last thing she told him to do was "run." The clones later informed Jarrus they had chips in their heads and could not resist. Rex overheard Jarrus and informed Jarrus and Bridger that he did not betray his Jedi, as he, Wolffe and Gregor all had their control chips removed and everyone had a choice.[7]
The joopa
- "Oh, hunter, bait, it's... all the same."
- ―Gregor to Ezra Bridger and Sabine Wren upon revealing Orrelios's role in catching the joopa
Big Bongo wrapped his tongue around Orrelios.
After Orrelios was harnessed to the modified main cannon's laser line, the Lasat walked along the planet's surface while he held his bo-rifle in attack position. Meanwhile, Gregor revealed to Bridger and Wren that Orrelios was the bait, further angering Jarrus with the clones. Jarrus berated Gregor, telling the clone there was a difference between being the hunter versus being the bait. However, it was too late for Orrelios to escape, as Big Bongo ambushed Orrelios, wrapping his long slimy tongue around the Lasat, and yanked him under the surface and into his mouth.[7]
As Wolffe piloted the AT-TE and chased after the Big Bongo, Rex informed Wren he was under the assumption she had expertise in mechanics. He instructed Wren to keep her eyes on the regulator next to the main projectile gun. If the line overheated and shut down, they would also lose the joopa and Orrelios. Meanwhile, Gregor handed both Bridger and Jarrus a Joopa prod. After Jarrus and Bridger each sent two jolts down the line, Bridger jumped onto the edge of the balcony to get a better angle for a third round but soon instructed Jarrus to lift him up onto his shoulders. Once Wren finished fixing the regulator line, Bridger used both electrostaffs to fire one last jolt to the joopa, causing him to burst through the surface. Rex fired one shot from the main cannon, killing the giant beast, and enabling a slime-covered Orrelios to exit Big Bongo's mouth.[7]
The rebels' location revealed
- "I... I contacted the Empire. If they found out we were helping Jedi, they'd wipe us out... I wanted to protect you guys, protect our squad."
"The war is over. We are free men. We can't live under the fear of the Empire for the rest of our lives, Wolffe. That's not freedom." - ―Wolffe and Rex after Sabine revealed that the clones had contacted the Empire
Wolffe expressed his regret to Rex after he was confronted about reporting the Spectres' presence to the Empire.
That evening, after the clones used the outrigger towing booms to latch the Big Bongo to the side of the walker, Rex informed Bridger he had assembled the list of potential bases, as well as protocols and clearance codes the Empire still used. Wren used data-tapes to copy them from the walker's main computer. However, when Wren looked at the computer, she discovered the Spectres presence had been reported to the Empire. She exited the AT-TE's cabin and reported the clones had turned the Spectres in using a binary transmission, and there also were messages from Tano that Rex ignored. Rex was shocked, as he did not know Tano ever sent him any transmissions. Rex turned to Wolffe and demanded his brother to reveal what he had done, while Jarrus instructed Wren to warn Syndulla and to have her scan for incoming ships. Wolffe revealed to Rex he reported the Spectres' presence to the Empire, in order to protect Rex, Gregor and himself,[7] as he feared the Jedi. It was also for this reason that Wolffe hid messages Tano sent to Rex.[1] Rex reminded his brother the war was over, and they could not remain under the fear of the Empire for the rest of their lives, as that was not freedom.[7]
When Wren arrived at the Phantom, she discovered a dwarf probe droid inside, scanning the auxiliary ship's computers. The droid opened fire on her and damaged the Phantom's port engine. Jarrus chased the droid across the underside of the walker and fired his blaster until the probe was out of his blaster's range. In response, Rex fired a DC-15A blaster rifle from one of the railed balconies of the AT-TE, destroying the droid, but only after it transmitted its recordings to the Empire.[7]
The AT-TE towing Big Bongo as the sandstorm nears the walker.
The next day, the Spectres informed the clones they wanted to leave Seelos, before the Empire arrived. However, Wren reported to Jarrus that a sandstorm was coming. Jarrus informed her that if Empire arrived before they finished their repairs and left the surface, the storm would be the least of their problems. Immediately afterward, Rex handed Bridger the list of coordinates of every Republic base, Separatist installation, smuggler's den and pirate hideout in the Outer Rim, as well as a few Mandalorian bases that even the Empire had forgotten. When Bridger asked Rex if he wanted to come with the Spectres, the clone told him his days of fighting were long gone, and he'd rather stay on the AT-TE. Although he did instruct Bridger to tell Tano that he said hello.[17]
After the Relentless arrived in the system, Agent Kallus contacted Wolffe on a viewscreen. The former clone commander attempted to convince Kallus the clones made a mistake and had not seen any rebels. However, Kallus showed Wolffe and Rex the probe's recording of the Phantom on top of the AT-TE. Rex informed Kallus that he would need all his stormtroopers to beat them.[17]
The battle begins
- Gregor: "Will you look at the size of those things!"
- Rex: "Huh. Reinforced armored plating, heavy cannons and antipersonnel blasters. Mmm."
- Ezra: "I'm glad you guys are excited, but those giant death machines are on their way to blow us to bits."
- ―Gregor, Rex and Ezra, as they inspected the opposing AT-ATs[17]
Immediately after the clones' conversation with Kallus, Wren ran inside the walker, informing the rebels that the Empire had found them. As a TIE fighter fired on the walker, the rebels ran outside to destroy the TIE, while Wolffe got the walker moving in evasive maneuvers. On the roof of the AT-TE, Orrelios fired a Z-6 rotary blaster cannon and Wren fired a DC-15A blaster rifle, while Jarrus and Bridger protected the Phantom by repelling blasts with their lightsabers. Rex told rebels they were wasting ammo and then handed Gregor a rocket launcher. The retired clone commander fired one rocket, which destroyed the TIE.[17]
When Rex walked over to the mass-driver cannon, Bridger apologized for being in the clone's seat. Instead of telling the Padawan to move, Rex informed Bridger the traverse controls were on his left, while the elevation was on his right. After Wren finished preparing the Phantom, Bridger insisted they could not leave the clones stranded on the AT-TE. However, before they could make any other decisions, they heard clanking of movement in the distance. Wolffe pointed in the horizon at three All Terrain Armored Transports.[17]
After Gregor dropped Big Bongo, Wolffe piloted the AT-TE towards the storm, while the AT-ATs fired on the walker.
Rex used a pair of macrobinoculars to study the opposing walkers. After reporting the AT-ATs had reinforced armor plating, heavy cannons and antipersonnel blasters, Rex instructed Wolffe to change the AT-TE's direction, so they could fight the upcoming battle on his terms. He told Gregor to drop the joopa,[17] which had become dead weight,[5] enabling the walker to move more quickly. Gregor pressed the button on the control panel, dropping Big Bongo.[17]
After the AT-TE turned around, Kallus informed his pilots that the clones could not outrun them. He instructed his walkers to fire at will on the AT-TE. Wren reported that the Phantom was in good enough form to fly. However, Rex retorted it was too late as the AT-ATs were already on top of them. Bridger agreed and added on that the walkers would shoot them down. Therefore, the clones continued their current trajectory and lured the Empire's forces into the storm. Rex informed the Spectres they would all be blind, except for Jarrus and Bridger as they were Jedi. Jarrus reluctantly agreed and ordered everyone inside the AT-TE.[17]
- "You put us right in the middle of 'em to get us a shot. It's crazy, but it's probably our best chance."
- ―Rex after the walker was surrounded by the AT-ATs
As the AT-TE walked through storm, Bridger said that they would not be able to hide forever. Wren informed them that despite the AT-ATs being practically impervious to blasters, they had one weak spot: the neck. Gregor added on that one well-placed shot from the main gun should destroy the opposing walker. Meanwhile, Kallus ordered his AT-ATs to turn 30 degrees left, in hopes of flanking the AT-TE.[17]
Jarrus used the Force to navigate the clones through the sandstorm.
Shortly afterwards, Jarrus instructed Wolffe to stop the AT-TE, while Kallus, confused on why his forces had not found the AT-TE, ordered his walkers to perform the pincer maneuver. Simultaneously, Jarrus ordered Wolffe to circle left, in double time, before making a full stop. The AT-TE was surrounded by the opposing AT-ATs. However, that worked to the clones and Spectres' advantage, as being in the middle of the Empire's walkers enabled them to get their shot. Gregor offered to take the shot, but Jarrus countered, instructing Bridger to take the shot. Bridger wanted Jarrus to shoot the cannon, but Rex agreed with Jarrus. He told Bridger they needed one Jedi manning the cannon, while the other stayed on the interior to lead them out of their current dilemma. Rex told Wren to spot Bridger. The clone tossed Bridger his helmet and told the young Jedi to hang on tight.[17]
After Bridger moved the main cannon to around point five, he reported that the targeting scope was useless. Jarrus reminded Bridger he was not going to see the exact position with his eyes, but the walker was there. Trusting himself, Bridger removed Rex's helmet and with his eyes closed, fired the cannon, destroying the neck of the AT-AT in front of them. The neck exploded, causing the walker to collapse. The clones took advantage of the opening, and Wolffe moved the AT-TE past their fallen opponent. However, in response, Kallus ordered his forces to focus their fire on the energy burst.[17]
As the AT-TE exited the storm, Rex congratulated Bridger on his shot, then ordered him to get the Phantom moving as that was their only chance to escape. Jarrus reminded Bridger they had to bring Rex's intel back to the Rebellion. Before stepping onto the Phantom, Bridger told Jarrus the other part of their mission was to bring Rex back with them and they could not abandon the clones. In response, Rex told Bridger the clones were not being abandoned. Rather, they were covering the Spectres' escape. As Bridger stepped into the Phantom, Rex hopped onto the main cannon and told Bridger they were soldiers, and this is what they were born to do.[17]
The final stand
- "Kanan, you know better than anyone. They won't give up. This fight is gonna be their last."
- ―Ezra Bridger to Kanan Jarrus as the Phantom flew away from the AT-TE
As the Phantom flew away from the AT-TE, Rex ordered Wolffe to turn them around, confronting the remaining two AT-ATs. Rex knew the battle could be their end, but they would at least go down like a clone should. They opened fire and charged at the opposing AT-ATs. Meanwhile, Bridger reminded Jarrus that he knew better than anyone that the clones would not give up and this fight would be their last.[17]
As Wolffe continued to move the AT-TE towards the Empire, Kallus ordered his pilots to intensify their forward firepower, slowing the AT-TE down. After Wolffe informed Rex and Gregor he was going for all four of the AT-AT's legs,[17] which had balance problems,[5] due to unstable legs and their high center of gravity,[18] the Imperial Agent remarked the clones had lost their minds. However, the clones quickly found themselves outflanked. At the same time, Jarrus told Bridger, Wren and Orrelios he had his problems with clones, but he did not want them to die.[17]
Rex's AT-TE makes it final stand against the larger AT-AT.
As Rex closed his eyes, expecting a warrior's demise, the Phantom fired on the AT-AT's flank, followed by Jarrus, Bridger and Orrelios jumping onto the roof of the second AT-AT's cockpit. The Jedi used their lightsabers to cut a hole in the roof, with all three rebels jumped inside the Empire's walker as Rex remarked it was just like the old days. The Spectres fired a few rounds from their commandeered AT-AT on Kallus's walker while Rex fired on the walker's neck, which caused the walker to collapse. In response, Kallus ordered his pilots to evacuate to their speeders.[17]
Aftermath
- Rex: "Looks like we live to fight another day."
- Wolffe: "Don't we always?"
- Gregor: "Well, we do when we've got a Jedi leading us."
- ―Rex, Wolffe and Gregor while standing on top of the AT-TE's remains[17]
Rex with Tano and the Spectres on a CR90 corvette after he joined the Rebellion.
As the Empire fled from Seelos, the clones celebrated their victory, and Rex remarked they lived to see another day. Gregor replied that they at least did when a Jedi was leading them. The three clones turned from the remains of their destroyed home and saluted Jarrus. Rex agreed to join the Rebellion and left Seelos with the Spectres on the Ghost. Rex soon reunited with Tano on a CR90 corvette, where he thanked the Spectres and informed Tano he would not have survived without their assistance.[17]
Wolffe and Gregor remained on Seelos,[19] and they repurposed the commandeered AT-AT into their new mobile home and headquarters, naming the walker Joopa Base.[20] Over time, they also repurposed parts of Rex's AT-TE in order to modify their new home to include the landing pad.[21]
Behind the scenes
- "I always wanted to see an AT-TE fight an AT-AT in like a big kind of Kaiju battle... I could have done twenty-one minutes of just that."
- ―Dave Filoni on the battle between Rex's AT-TE and Kallus's AT-ATs
Modified AT-TE card with technical information from Star Wars Rebels Facebook account.
Rex's AT-TE first appeared in "The Lost Commanders," the third episode of the second season of the animated television series Star Wars Rebels.[7] It was first referred to as "Rex's AT-TE" in the 2019 reference book Ultimate Star Wars, New Edition,[23] while the StarWars.com Databank entry for the walker confirmed it was also known as the "Modified AT-TE Walker."[2] In the Rebels Recon episode for "Relics of the Old Republic," Dave Filoni revealed he always wanted to see an AT-TE fight an AT-AT in a big Kaiju battle, elaborating he could have done twenty-one minutes of just this one battle scene.[22] Concept art by Chris Glenn from July 29, 2014, revealed the concept of the AT-TE's interior. The caption mentioned that another illustration depicted the Big Bongo in the cockpit, as well as hash marks on the wall, which confirmed the walker had at least twelve kills.[24] Another piece of concept art by Glenn from "The Lost Commanders" showed the cockpit's interior, including the hash marks, as well as a decal for 79's,[25] the clone nightclub on Coruscant.[24]
On October 17, 2015, a card posted to the Star Wars Rebels Facebook account revealed the manufacturer, model name and armament of the AT-TE,[26] which matched the data file information on the walker that was first revealed eleven days prior on October 6, 2015, in the reference book Star Wars Rebels: Visual Guide: Epic Battles.[27] Concept art diagrams of Joopa Base by Jason Pichon from the "Behind-the-Scenes Gallery" for "A Fool's Hope," later highlighted the parts of Rex's AT-TE that were repurposed into the commandeered AT-AT.[28]
