Biography

Hebsly[2] was a human[1] pilot who served in the Galactic Empire's Imperial Navy, holding the rank of lieutenant in the officer corps[2] during the Galactic Civil War against the Alliance to Restore the Republic.[1] In 4 ABY,[3] he[2] was among the Imperial forces on board the Death Star II superweapon while it was under construction in the Endor system. When the Sith Lord Darth Vader arrived on the Death Star in order to increase the speed of its construction, Hebsly was part of a line of Imperial officers who awaited the Sith's arrival in one of the station's hangars, remaining still as Vader disembarked from his shuttle and greeted Moff Tiaan Jerjerrod.[1] Jerjerrod matched the gait and rhythm with which Vader had departed when he left the hangar in the hopes that Hebsly and the others present in the hangar would see how aligned and attuned the pair were based on the harmony in the choreography of their parting.[4]

After Galactic Emperor Sheev Palpatine also arrived on the station, the fleet of the Rebel Alliance arrived in the Endor system to try and destroy the Death Star, falling for a trap that Palpatine had set. Imperial forces surrounded the rebels and attacked, but the Emperor ordered only the Imperial starfighters to engage so he might demonstrate the power of the Death Star's superlaser on the larger ships.[1]

Hebsly flew a TIE/ln space superiority starfighter during the battle and at one point was tailed through debris by a rebel X-wing starfighter.[2] The rebels ultimately claimed victory, destroying the Death Star after the death of the Emperor.[1]

Personality and traits

Hebsly had light skin and brown hair.[1]

Equipment

While on the Death Star, Hebsly wore a black Imperial officer's uniform including a black belt, black boots, and an Imperial kepi with an officer's disk.[1] During the Battle of Endor, the lieutenant flew a TIE/ln space superiority starfighter.[2]

Behind the scenes

Hebsly first appeared in the 1983 original trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi.[1] The scene in which Hebsly appeared was shot on Stage 6 at Elstree Studios between February 22 and February 24, 1982. The floor of the hangar had to be repainted several times due to the movement and positioning of the various extras on the set, which caused regular damage.[5]

Footage of Hebsly was re-used in the Special Editions release of The Empire Strikes Back.

Footage of Vader's arrival on the second Death Star was reused for his return from[6] the planet[7] Bespin to[6] his flagship, the Executor,[7] in the 1997 Special Edition release of The Empire Strikes Back. As such, Mianda's actor is seen in the Special Edition version alongside other extras who portrayed Imperial officers in Return of the Jedi, however, this article assumes these to be separate characters.[6]

In the current Star Wars canon, Hebsly's name was first used in a preview for the 2024 Battle Over Endor Scenario Pack set for Atomic Mass Games' Star Wars: X-Wing Second Edition board game.[2] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, Hebsly was first identified in 2000 on cards in the "Death Star II Limited" set for the Star Wars Customizable Card Game published by Decipher[8][9]
