Dafir Toogan was a mechanic for resistance fighter Saw Gerrera's partisans, attempting to maintain the starships of the group's Cavern Angels squadron during Gerrera's campaigns against the Galactic Empire. In 1 BBY, Toogan was based out of the Catacombs of Cadera on the moon Jedha and participated in an ambush of Imperial forces by the partisans in Jedha City's Tythoni Square.
After the successful ambush, Toogan returned to the catacombs and was near the armory shortly before the Empire's Death Star superweapon destroyed Jedha City and sent a shockwave toward the partisan base. As the partisans attempted to escape the blast, Toogan ran out of the catacombs to one of the Cavern Angels' T-65 X-wing starfighters.
Biography
Dafir Toogan took part in a partisan ambush in Tythoni Square.
Dafir Toogan was a mechanic who joined the resistance fighter Saw Gerrera's partisans during their campaigns against the Galactic Empire. He attempted to maintain the chronically malfunctioning starships of the group's Cavern Angels squadron[1] and was with the partisans while they were based out of the Catacombs of Cadera on the moon Jedha.[2] In 1 BBY,[3] he was in Jedha City on the moon and passed by the rebels Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor in one of the city's marketplaces, later standing with[2] fellow partisan Casitine Loscar[1] near Erso as she met the Guardian of the Whills Chirrut Îmwe for the first time.[2]
Toogan moved away when Erso did, crossing paths with her and Andor again as he leaned against an alleyway wall, standing to speak with a hooded individual as the duo passed by. Toogan was then among the partisan forces that ambushed an Imperial convoy carrying kyber crystals through Tythoni Square. After a grenade was thrown at the TX-225 GAVw "Occupier" combat assault tank carrying the crystals, Toogan emerged and opened fire on the Imperial stormtroopers in the square alongside a group of partisans that included[2] Weeteef Cyu-Bee.[4] Toogan then ran across the square as the tank fired on one of the buildings being used by the partisans. Once the Imperials had all been killed, the partisans rushed forward to take the crystals and then fled as Imperial reinforcements arrived.[2]
Toogan fled from the shockwave headed for the Catacombs of Cadera.
Erso and Andor were captured by the partisans and taken back to the catacombs soon after the ambush. Having also returned to the partisan base, Toogan stood near his comrade[2] Beezer Fortuna[4] next to the partisans' armory as Erso was escorted past on her way to see Gerrera. The Empire soon fired the Death Star superweapon at Jedha City, destroying it and creating a shockwave headed toward the catacombs. To try to escape the blast, the partisans rushed from the catacombs, with Toogan running to one of the Cavern Angels' T-65 X-wing starfighters.[2] Some of the partisans did manage to successfully escape the shockwave and survive, although others were killed by the blast.[5]
Equipment
Exposure to fuel and coolant chemicals required Toogan to wear a black hermetic breath mask, which he donned under the hood of his brown robes. He also wore a black device on his chest with a cylinder on either side and a brown belt.[1] In combat, Toogan fought with a blaster rifle.[2]
Behind the scenes
Dafir Toogan was first revealed at Celebration Europe.
Dafir Toogan was created for the Anthology Series film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,[2] which was released on December 16, 2016.[6] Concept art including Toogan with a turban titled "Jedha Extras Silhouettes 1" was drawn for the film by costume concept artist Adam Brockbank.[7] Prior to the film's release, the character was revealed as part of a reel of promotional footage for Rogue One shown at Celebration Europe on July 15, 2016.[8] Toogan was identified in the 2023 reference book Star Wars: Dawn of Rebellion: The Visual Guide,[1] within a section written by Pablo Hidalgo.[9]
