- "Ah! Good to be back."
- ―Wrecker
The Bad Batch barracks were the barracks and personal quarters of the clone commando squad Clone Force 99, also known as the Bad Batch. Located on the planet Kamino in Tipoca City's military complex, the barracks were where the squad stayed and stored their gear. When the majority of the squad fled Kamino and deserted the newly formed Galactic Empire, the barracks were taken over by the Empire's new Elite Squad.
Description
- "I have concluded this space is unfit for habitation."
- ―AZI-3
The Bad Batch barracks[4] were a room in Tipoca City's military complex on the planet Kamino during the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. The Republic's Clone Force 99, also known as the Bad Batch, used the barracks as their personal quarters.[2] The barracks were also the headquarters of the Special Operations Brigade.[5] The hexagonal room had a single door as its entrance, with two steps down to the main level. The walls and floors were gray with darker gray detail. Opposite of the door, large windows gave a view to Kamino's[2] constant[6] rain.[2]
The room included bunks for each member of the squad arranged around the space. Each bed had pillows and blankets on it. On the left side of the door was a hammock. Crates, gear, weapons, and other equipment was strewn throughout the room, on the floor, in makeshift stacks and piles, and atop a rectangular table in the center of the room.[2] Each clone had a personal footlocker.[7] The clone Wrecker's bunk was the closest to the door on the right side, and the clone Crosshair's was next to it on the right side. Wrecker had various clothing items, food, weights, and the tooka doll Lula in his space. Crosshair's area had three pictures of B1 battle droids hanging up that had been used as target practice. With carbon scoring on the droids' heads and bodies,[2] Crosshair's name was also on each picture in the bottom right corner.[8] On the left side, the squad leader Hunter's bunk was next to the door. The wall next to it featured the squad's skull logo and the Aurebesh numbering "99" below it. The clone Tech's space included technical diagrams on the walls, loose wiring, and a table with a work space.[2]
The room's single door led to one of Tipoca City's many hallways. Wrecker kept a tally mark column of[2] won and lost missions on the wall next to the door, with the tallies in the winning column reaching fifty-five[7] by the end of the war.[3] The room was messy and filled with extraneous equipment. According to the clone Echo,[2] who joined the Bad Batch[9] in 19 BBY,[10] the room smelled bad.[2]
History
War's end
- "You're not authorized to be in here."
- ―A shock trooper discovers Omega in the barracks
After the Bad Batch returned to Kamino in 19 BBY[11] following a series of eleven missions, the last of which was the Battle of Kaller, they entered their barracks. Wrecker was relieved to be back, and while Echo felt that the smell was getting worse, Hunter reassured him that he would get used to it. After the fighting on the planet Kaller had been impacted by Order 66, a protocol initiated by the secret Sith Lord Darth Sidious to force the clone troopers of the Grand Army of the Republic to turn on their Jedi leaders, the squad discussed the events of Kaller inside their barracks. Crosshair passed judgement on the actions of Hunter, who shook off the clone's concerns. At Tipoca City, the squad witnessed the re-organization of the Republic into the Galactic Empire, and began to have doubts about the new regime.[2]
After the group was put through a training simulation at the Tipoca City Training Facility, at the behest of Admiral Wilhuff Tarkin, the squad was surprised and upset when the exercise included live fire. After passing the test, Clone Force 99 returned to their quarters. Wrecker expressed disgust with their treatment, and Tech and Echo agree that Tarkin had gone too far. Just then, the Admiral entered their barracks and complimented their performance. Telling the clones that the Kaminoan scientist Nala Se vouched for their abilities, Tarkin gave the clones a mission to eliminate an insurgent group on the planet Onderon.[2]
A curious clone
Omega and AZI-3 are discovered in the barracks.
While the Bad Batch was away on their mission, the young clone Omega, an enhanced individual who had a special interest in the Bad Batch, snuck into the barracks with her droid companion AZI-3. Although the droid felt that much of the stuff inside the barracks was "detritus," Omega liked it. She noticed the Lula doll and picked it up, peeking inside Hunter's foot locker soon after, finding a picture of the five members of the squad. However, the pair were then caught by a shock trooper quartermaster, who had arrived with three other clones to move the squad's gear out of the barracks and to a hangar. When the shock trooper tried to take Omega away, AZI-3 stated that they were official Kaminoan medical personnel, but the quartermaster then pulled out a blaster pistol and stunned the droid before dragging Omega away. The other three clones set to work hauling Clone Force 99's gear out of the barracks.[2]
Omega would eventually be placed in prison, where she was soon joined by the members of the Bad Batch. The squad had disobeyed orders on their mission and, as a result, been detained, having failed to pledge their loyalty to the nascent Empire. However, the Batch eventually escaped and fled Kamino along with Omega, deserting the Empire and leaving their barracks behind.[2]
New use
- "This is our room? What happened to it?"
- ―Wrecker sees the old barracks
After the Bad Batch deserted Kamino, Crosshair, who had chosen to stay and serve the Empire, was given control of a new Elite Squad. The squad took over the Bad Batch's barracks for their own use. The room was cleaned out and new gear was placed inside for the group of elite troopers. After the Elite Squad returned to Onderon to finish the mission that Clone Force 99 had failed, the group returned to Kamino and to the barracks. Inside, Crosshair observed the room's new state, and as his new squad-mates sat in the bunks of his old companions, he glanced at the tally marks signifying missions past with his old unit. The sniper sat down on his bunk and reflected on his new situation.[3]
The Bad Batch found themselves back at their old barracks.
When the Empire later captured Hunter and brought him to Kamino, the squad mounted a rescue and freed their leader. However, the Empire then bombarded Tipoca City, wanting to permanently shut down cloning. The squad was trapped in the city as it was destroyed and sank to the bottom of the ocean. As the city settled on the ocean floor, the squad regrouped and searched for a secure location, soon finding themselves in their old barracks, which was one of the few habitable compartments of the disintegrating city. Wrecker excitedly noted that their board of completed missions was intact, and Echo expressed that the smell had gone away. The squad would soon exit the room and used the Kamino tube system to escape the city. The room was left destroyed along with the rest of the city.[12]
Behind the scenes
The Bad Batch barracks first appeared in "Aftermath,"[2] the debut episode of the animated television series Star Wars: The Bad Batch. The episode premiered on Disney+ on May 4, 2021.[13] The room was identified in the accompanying episode guide released on StarWars.com.[4] Concept art of the barracks' interior was done by artist Jason Pichon.[4][7][8]
