- "Snoke's slippers are a reminder of the First Order's obsession with the past, when royal houses clothed themselves in finery while their subjects struggled to obtain the basic necessities of life."
- ―A book's description of the slippers
Snoke's Slippers comprised a part of the First Order Supreme Leader's ornate wear. An elegant pair of slippers that provided comfort and flair, they had crimson lining and were adorned with golden embroidery, matching both the red armor of Snoke's Praetorian Guard and his own auropyle robes. In 34 ABY, Snoke wore his slippers in his lair, the throne room of the dreadnought Supremacy, conducting his affair—galactic conquest, meeting with First Order General Armitage Hux, his apprentice Kylo Ren, and the Jedi trainee Rey. The latter Force-sensitives proved a lethal pair. Supreme Leader Snoke was slain in his slippers by Ren and collapsed, bisected, with his feet remaining in them.
Description
- "The First Order is not often equated with finery and wealth, however its figurehead had a certain flair for style."
- ―A book's introduction to Snoke's Slippers
The slippers on their wearer
Snoke was physically infirm, with his feet in perpetual pain and aching with every step; the extra padding[2] of his two-tone slippers prioritized his comfort[1] and protected his decaying body whilst also serving as his show of status as Supreme Leader of the First Order. The slippers matched Snoke's choice of corded auropyle fabric khalat robes and belt. Each slipper's golden exterior was embroidered with swirls and ended in a pointed tip while the lining inside was crimson, matching the red armor of the dictator's Praetorian Guard. Whilst the First Order was known for neither elegance nor opulence, Snoke's attire afforded him a personal flair.[2]
History
- "When this paramilitary group surfaced as a threat to the New Republic, it was led by the shadowy figure of Supreme Leader Snoke, who ruled while wearing these golden slippers."
- ―A book elaborating on Snoke's significance
A student of the dark side of the Force and a product of the Sith Lord Darth Sidious' cloning experiments on the planet Exegol, Snoke rose to the helm of the First Order in the Unknown Regions, from where it planned to conquer the galaxy. The elusive Supreme Leader wore his golden attire partly to protect his body and partly to project his status, focusing largely on matters of the Force aboard his flagship, the Supremacy, and preferring to communicate holographically from the dreadnought in an intimidating, exaggerated stature.[2] Between around 28 ABY and 34 ABY,[3] Snoke's Slippers[2] stood on a[4] planet[5] in the Rarlech system as their owner trained Kylo Ren in the dark side. Using Ren's command shuttle for transportation, they then traveled to the world of Dagobah, visiting the Cave of Evil to test the conflicted apprentice.[4]
In the same time period,[6] the slippers were on Snoke's feet when he stood up from his throne aboard the Supremacy to command Kylo Ren and First Order General Armitage Hux to demonstrate the First Order's power on the world Karaxis.[7] In 34 ABY,[3] Supreme Leader Snoke was wearing his slippers when he summoned General Hux to his throne room in order to reprimand the officer for letting the Resistance escape at the Battle of D'Qar. After dismissing Hux, Snoke received his apprentice and scolded him for being defeated by the Resistance and Rey, their Jedi-in-training. The furious master of the slippers rose from his throne to walk closer to Ren and delivered a bout of Force lightning.[8]
Supreme Leader Snoke sported his slippers standing on the Supremacy.
Afterward, Snoke's Slippers witnessed Ren bringing a captive Rey to their owner's throne room and satisfaction, and the Supreme Leader placed Rey's lightsaber by his side on the throne. He then tortured Rey before shoving her before Kylo Ren, demanding that he murder her. However, Ren had plans of his own.[8] Using the Force to blindside his master and move Rey's lightsaber, Ren ignited the blade, bisecting the shocked slipper wearer. Failed by his visions and senses,[9] Snoke's torso collapsed over his legs and his footwear.[8]
When General Hux investigated the ruined throne room following a skirmish between Rey, Ren, and the late Supreme Leader's Praetorian Guards, his eyes found the broken body at the throne. The slippers remained on Snoke's feet.[8] A statue of Snoke wearing his slippers was displayed by the collector Dok-Ondar in his antiques shop on the planet Batuu[10] within the same year.[3] Snoke's Slippers were mentioned in a book describing objects relating to galactic history, opining that the footwear exemplified the First Order's obsession with the past, in this case royalty who indulged in finery while their people struggled to survive.[2]
Behind the scenes
A Phil Noto comic cover featuring the slippers
- "I think the slipper line is gone from the film, but Snoke definitely mentioned them at one point. Ian Jones, our props maker, handmade him some gold, embroidered slippers. The reference guide we were using in the shots had huge feet. Ian, who is very clever, just made them from scratch."
- ―David Crossman
Snoke's Slippers first appeared in 2017's sequel trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi.[8] The slippers were conceptualized by Robert Rowley and handmade by props maker Ian Jones, accomodating Snoke's large feet. In The Art of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, costume supervisor David Crossman revealed that the character was intended to speak about his slippers in the film.[11] They were identified in the 2023 reference book Star Wars 100 Objects by Kristin Baver.[2]
In the first issue of the 2025 comic series Star Wars: Legacy of Vader—set shortly after the events of The Last Jedi, written by Charles Soule, illustrated by Luke Ross, and published by Marvel Comics[12] on February 5, 2025[13]—Kylo Ren presents Snoke's body to First Order personnel in a hangar of his flagship, the Finalizer, claiming that the Resistance had killed Snoke, announcing that he is the new Supreme Leader, and casting Snoke's bisected body into space. Snoke's Slippers do not appear in the issue; instead, his corpse wears plain golden boots.[12]
