9-EZ[3] was an A-LT Utility Droid who operated on the moon Jedha.[1] In 1 BBY,[4] 9-EZ was rolling through a street in Jedha City, when a passsing Imperial TX-225 GAVw "Occupier" combat assault tank transporting kyber crystals was attacked by Partisan fighters. During the ensuing fighting, the tank and multiple buildings were destroyed by Partisan grenades and the laser cannons of the tank. Shortly afterwards the Empire destroyed Jedha City with the Death Star superweapon.[1]

9-EZ first appeared in the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story[1] and was designed by concept artist Jake Lunt Davies. Originally, he was meant to be working on Jyn Erso's homestead,[2] but was instead relegated to a brief appearance in Jedha City.[1]

He was meant to be working around the homestead of Jyn's childhood home but only ever made a fleeting appearance on the streets of Jeddha just before the rebel attack on the tank. The original design featured a white and red barrel shaped body similar to an R unit flanked by tracks in triangular fairings and topped with a clear dome housing a sensor and other tech. More versions would reappear in Solo - a similar but darker version was being used by the Empire on the war-torn mud planet of Mimban (pic 4), whilst Dryden Vos had slick serving droid versions - PA-LT4 - aboard his yacht with the the dome replaced by a serving tray bearing delicacies for his guests (pic 5). On Kessel there were two other versions - T1M8-LT2 and P6B-LT2 - both with solid domes and surface eye-tech detail (pics 6 and 7). The names for these two droids pay homage to the two people who built them in Neal Scanlan’s creature shop - Tim Berry (T1M8) @timatronics and R2 builder Lee Towersey (LT) @leetowersey. Finally in pics 8 and 9, you can see another, much slicker interpretation of the design used in The Last Jedi. This was the ‘Step Droid’, who would glide up to arriving speeders outside the casino. A series of steps would slide out of his body allowing guests to descend from their vehicles." (screenshot)
