Fascism was a political philosophy based on militant authoritarianism. A number of laws passed by Emperor Palpatine were referred to as fascist by members of the Rebel Alliance.[1] In 13 ABY, opponents of the New Republic were derogatorily referred to as fascists.[2]
Behind the scenes
Fascism was a key inspiration for George Lucas in creating Star Wars. In 1973, Lucas planned to focus on the protagonists defending their rightful home planet of Aquilae, which he likened to North Vietnam, and their conflict with gangsters aided by the Empire, which he likened to the United States of America ten years from 1973. The story would take place at the turning point of society pivoting toward either fascism or revolution.[3] Indeed, fascism and Nazism was used as one of the inspirations for the Galactic Empire, the main antagonists of the original trilogy. Lucas also based the Rebels' ending celebration scene in A New Hope on imagery from the 1935 Nazi propaganda film Triumph of the Will.[4]
