"Drop your weapons and surrender!"
―Faris Karan, to Triv Blago[2]

Faris Karan was a Theelin Jedi Padawan of the Jedi Order during the High Republic Era. On the astronomical object Blarrum in 231 BBY, the Theelin and her Master, Carana-Vey Trana, searched for the wanted beast-trader Triv Blago in Kul Kenada Spaceport. The Theelin and the Aki-Aki confronted Blago while the trader was having a disagreement with the monster hunter Ty Yorrick, who fled and left them to the Jedi.

Between 231 BBY and 230 BBY, Karan and Trana attempted to stop Nihil led by the Tempest Runner Lourna Dee from raiding a facility on the moon Sulon. Trana was quickly knocked unconscious, prompting Karan to hold her lightsaber to the neck of the Nihil Quin Carree to compel Dee to call off scav droids attacking the facility. Though Dee complied, Karan's behavior became increasingly erratic due to the effects of the nearby Force-eating Nameless creature—the Leveler—until Carree became frustrated and knocked the Padawan out. When Eye of the Nihil Marchion Ro encountered the group, he let the Leveler eat Trana and then shot Karan, killing her.

Biography

Blarrum

"I should've known something was wrong when you hired me rather than going to the authorities. No wonder the Jays are looking for you. Looks to me like you deserve each other."
―Ty Yorrick leaves Triv Blago to the Jedi[2]

Faris Karan[3] was a Force-sensitive Theelin who served as a Jedi[2] Padawan[3] of the Jedi Order during the High Republic Era.[2] In 231 BBY,[4] Karan and[2] her Aki-Aki Jedi Master Carana-Vey Trana[3] sought to apprehend the Faust beast-trader Triv Blago, who was wanted for the illegal capture and transportation of dangerous animals. The two Jedi searched for Blago in Kul Kenada Spaceport on the Outer Rim astronomical object Blarrum.[2]

While the Theelin presented a hologram of Blago to a human, the former Jedi–turned–monster hunter Ty Yorrick, who was returning to the trader after killing an escaped prize gundark they had sent her to capture, attempted to sneak past without the two Jedi sensing her, although the Aki-Aki glanced in the direction she had traveled.[2]

Shortly afterward, the two Jedi confronted Blago as the trader was about to have their guards shoot Yorrick for her failure. The Theelin ordered Blago to surrender, and the two Jedi deflected the blaster fire of the trader's subordinates. As the Theelin and the Aki-Aki fought the guards, Yorrick escaped on a speeder and abandoned Blago, and the two Jedi apprehended the beast-trader.[2]

Sulon

"I'll give you a challenge!"
"Hmm? Well, well, well. What have we here?"
"Step away from him."
"Let me guess. You're his Padawan. A brave one, too, considering you have your lightsaber at my friend's throat."
―Faris Karan and Lourna Dee, on Sulon[3]

Between 231 BBY and 230 BBY,[1] Karan and Trana were present on[3] the moon[5] Sulon. They encountered the Nihil Tempest Runner Lourna Dee and her companion, the Nihil marauder Quin Carree, who were raiding a facility operated by the SoroSuub Corporation for weapons and other valuables. After a brief skirmish, Dee knocked Trana unconscious using a plasma shield. As Dee taunted the motionless Jedi, Karan crept up behind Carree and held her lightsaber against the Nihil's neck. Karan issued a challenge to Dee, attempting to appear calm, though Dee noticed her worry for Trana and general unsteady demeanor. The Padawan continued to insist that Dee let Trana go, though the Nihil disagreed, aiming a blaster at the unconscious Jedi instead.[3]

Eventually, Dee agreed to call off the scav droids attacking the facility and contacted her subordinate, Muglan Tarantyne, with new orders. However, the comm signal was blocked, with Dee trying to boost the signal as Karan became more irate. Karan's temperament quickly became more erratic due to the effects of the Force-eating Nameless creature—the Leveler—nearby. Dee attempted to diffuse the situation, calmly explaining to the Padawan that she had done as requested by throwing away her blaster and calling off the attacking droids, which meant the Padawan could lower her lightsaber. However, Karan began to ramble about the Force abandoning her and blamed the situation on Dee, who insisted it was not her fault. Carree, annoyed, elbowed Karan in the stomach and then punched her, causing the Padawan to drop to the floor. Carree and Dee discussed the situation afterward, confused why the Padawan's behavior had turned erratic so quickly.[3]

Eye of the Nihil Marchion Ro soon met Dee and Carree in the facility, and the three conversed near the two Jedi, still unconscious. Ro berated Dee for being sentimental by choosing to save Carree from Karan rather than pursue victory. The Nihil then fed Trana to the Leveler and then shot Karan with a blaster, after Carree indicated the Padawan was not yet dead. The Nameless bayed in disappointment at the Padawan's death, having wanted to consume her as well.[3] In 228 BBY,[6] Dee recounted the events on Sulon—including her encounter with Karan and Trana—to the journalist Rhil Dairo as part of an interview, though she felt the story was humiliating to reminisce on.[3]

Personality and traits

"It's a trick. You're testing me. Everyone's always testing me. Master Trana. The Force."
―Faris Karan, becoming increasingly erratic under the effects of a nearby Nameless[3]

Faris Karan cared about Trana's well-being and was willing to confront Dee and Carree to save her teacher's life. Upon first impression, Dee felt that the Padawan was not much of a threat, surmising that the Jedi's threat to her colleague Carree was low even though the latter was being held in place by Karan's lightsaber. Karan's behavior became increasingly erratic when affected by the Nameless on Sulon, believing she was being tested and that Dee was tricking her.[3] Karan had orange hair that she tied back in a ponytail, yellow eyes, and purple skin.[2]

Powers and abilities

"How are you doing this? The Force…the Force is gone…It's abandoned me… How are you doing this?"
―Faris Karan, when a Nameless affected her ability to use the Force[3]

As a member of the Jedi Order, Karan was a Force-sensitive trained to wield the Force. She was able to utilize a lightsaber.[2] Karan was capable of stealth endeavors, successfully sneaking up behind Carree to hold her hostage with a lightsaber. Like all Jedi, her ability to use the Force could be hampered by the presence of a Nameless creature in the near vicinity.[3]

Equipment

"And that's how you get a Jedi to drop their saber. An elbow to the stomach…"
―Quin Carree, after incapacitating Faris Karan so the Padawan would drop her lightsaber[3]

The Theelin Jedi wielded a green-bladed lightsaber. She wore Jedi apparel consisting of a brown cloak over a light brown tunic and dark brown pants, as well as a brown belt and black boots. The Jedi carried a holoprojector to display an image of Blago while searching for the beast-trader.[2]

Behind the scenes

"One of the joys of the High Republic has been introducing characters in one phase only to return to them in another. These two first appeared in MONSTER OF TEMPLE PEAK (drawn by @rachael_stott_9 ) and now have names and fates in TEMPEST BREAKER. Of course, back then I had no idea that the padawan would be played by my eldest daughter @chl0may, currently at drama school here in Bristol."
―Cavan Scott[7]

Faris Karan debuted in The High Republic Adventures — The Monster of Temple Peak 1.

Faris Karan first appeared, albeit unidentified, in the first issue of the 2021 comic miniseries Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures — The Monster of Temple Peak. The issue was written by Cavan Scott, illustrated by Rachael Stott, and published by IDW Publishing as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[2] Phase I on August 11, 2021.[8]

The Padawan later appeared in flashbacks[9] in the December 3, 2024, Phase III[8] audio drama The High Republic: Tempest Breaker, also written by Scott, where she was identified as Faris Karan.[3] Prior to the audio drama's release, Scott confirmed the then-upcoming appearance of Karan in the media in his newsletter, along with the spelling of the character's name. Karan was voiced by Cavan's daughter, Chloe Scott.[10] After the audio drama's release, Scott commented on social media that introducing characters such as Faris Karan and Carana-Vey Trana in one part of the The High Republic initiative to then have them return in a later addition to the multimedia project was one of the joys of working on the project. When he had initially written the character into The Monster of Temple Peak, he had not been aware his daughter would eventually go on to voice Karan in Tempest Breaker,[7] but was proud she had been able to make her Star Wars debut for the audio drama.[10]
