Esstee-Ninety-Three was a PJ unit droid who worked at the shipyard of the criminal mechanic Rekias Nodo during the time of the Galactic Empire. Esstee-Ninety-Three was a hulking bipedal droid with a pair of powerful piston arms that featured pincers. The droid had a singular red sensor and gray plating with yellow stripes. Esstee-Ninety-Three was a close friend to Gorko, another of Nodo's employees. The employees of the shipyard, located on a jungle planet, dismantled stolen starships for scrap.[2]
When the smugglers Han Solo and Chewbacca crash-landed onto the planet on which Nodo's shipyard was situated[2] at some point after the year 10 BBY,[1] Solo encountered Esstee-Ninety-Three while stealing a heat exchanger from Nodo's yacht to repair his own starship, the Millennium Falcon. Esstee-Ninety-Three was shot and destroyed by Solo, who was subsequently caught by Nodo. Solo and Chewbacca eventually escaped the planet aboard their starship.[2]
Behind the scenes
- Gorko: "He shot Esstee-Ninety-Three."
- Nodo: "Big mistake. Ninety-Three was Gorko's best friend."
- Solo: "Then I did you a favor. Seriously, how dumb can a droid get?"
- ―Gorko, Rekias Nodo, and Han Solo, in one of the paths featuring Esstee-Ninety-Three[2]
Esstee-Ninety-Three appeared in Choose Your Destiny: A Han & Chewie Adventure, a 2018 novel in the Star Wars: Choose Your Destiny series written by Cavan Scott and illustrated by Elsa Charretier.[2]
The droid is featured in two paths that diverge after Solo attempts to steal the heat exchanger, both of which leave Esstee-Ninety-Three destroyed. In one path, Esstee-Ninety-Three confronts Solo, and Solo throws the exchanger to the droid, ordering it to catch the component. Surprised, the droid does so, and is subsequently shot by Solo. Gorko, angered by his friend's destruction, catches Solo, who remarks on the droid's lack of intelligence after being taken to Nodo. The other path has Esstee-Ninety-Three restrain Meecha Odon, a slave of Nodo's who previously encountered Solo while trying to escape. Odon attempts to inform the droid of the presence of Solo and the Millennium Falcon, but Esstee-Ninety-Three does not believe her claims. Solo sneaks up behind Esstee-Ninety-Three, shooting the droid in the back. As both paths lead to the same point in the story and result in Esstee-Ninety-Three's destruction,[2] this article does not assume which set of events is the canon story, only that the droid is destroyed.
