- "Did you ever consider asking Douglas to take you to the temple for the empath tests?"
"It's not the Force, Vernestra, it's just paying attention." - ―Vernestra Rwoh and Imri Cantaros
Vernestra Rwoh (right) asked Imri Cantaros (left) if he had considered undergoing the empath tests.
Empath tests were used by the Jedi Order to determine if its members possessed the rare Force ability to feel the emotions of other beings that was[1] known as Force empathy.[2] The tests were performed inside the Jedi Temple on[1] the Core Worlds planet[3] Coruscant.[1]
In 232 BBY,[4] during the High Republic Era, Jedi Knight Vernestra Rwoh asked Padawan Imri Cantaros—who she knew was a lot more sensitive to the emotions of others than herself—if he had considered asking his Jedi Master, Douglas Sunvale, to take him to the Jedi Temple to undergo the empath tests. In response, Cantaros shook his head and stated his insight was a result of paying attention rather than anything to do with the Force.[1] The Padawan, in fact, had exceptional levels of Force empathy.[2]
Behind the scenes
Empath tests were mentioned in the 2021 junior novel The High Republic: A Test of Courage, written by Justina Ireland and published as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[1] Phase I.[5]
