The MD-series medical droid was a line of medical droids manufactured by Industrial Automaton. The MD medical specialists were a common sight throughout the galaxy, and while not as advanced as the 2-1B, the MDs were highly respected on medical centers of less-civilized planets, where their low cost and high levels of specialization on specific medical fields were a big help for local physicians. They were also liked for their lower prices, as a standard unit would normally cost around 2,000 credits.

Description

MD-series medical droids had a similar body style to 2-1B surgical droids owing to the fact that they were both produced by Industrial Automaton. MD units featured more Human-like as well as an insulated sheath that protected the droid's internal mechanisms. They were more dependent on connections to mainframe computers and did not operate as effectively outside of a medical facility.[1]

Industrial Automaton produced ten distinct MD models, each one performing a specialized role and equipped with speciality attachments. MD-0s were diagnostic units, MD-1s served as laboratory technicians]], MD-2s worked as anaesthesiologists, MD-3s were pharmacists, and MD-4s were micorsurgery specialists. The most popular model was the MD-5, which acted as a general practitioner.[1]

The MD-6 was produced exclusively for the Galactic Empire, while MD-7s were experts in emergency trauma. MD-8s and 9s were prototypes released in limited numbers, while MD-10s, the most recent version, were each a specialist in a certain field.[1]

An MD-series medical droid

Manufactured by Industrial Automaton, the MD-series were not the most advanced medical droids on the market but they were by far the most common. They were introduced decades prior to the Galactic Civil War, and new units were still produced daily on the factory moon Telti well into the reign of the New Republic.[1]

The MD-series was cheaper than other medical droid models, making it a popular choice for medical facilities on less civilized outposts, or those working under budget constraints. Practicing doctors commonly used MD droids to assist them with medical procedures. Due to the fact that the droids very rarely left medical bays, they did not require a lot of maintenance and if proper care was provided they could last for centuries.[2]

MD units served aboard the Death Star I.[source?]
